Re: [gatortalk] Huntley Johnson statement on Callaway

Unfortunately, student conduct proceedings do not follow the expected rules of traditional legal proceedings.  The probable cause standard is very low.  Traditional rules of evidence are ignored.  For example, hearsay is usually allowed.   The bottom line is that once an allegation is filed, there is almost a presumption of guilt.

Given the nature of the charges going through the conduct board, my experience suggests that there was an allegation of assault or academic dishonesty.  Failing a drug test would usually have gone through the AA.

There's been rumors there was something similar to Treon's issue in 2014, but law enforcement investigated and found no evidence to bring charges. Totally unsubstantiated rumors, other than the fact Callaway has an attorney and faced a SJC hearing.

Does anyone know what Callaway supposedly did?  Or didn't do?

The Florida Gators kicked off spring practice this week, but two notable players were missing from the action - Antonio Callaway and Treon Harris. Jim McElwain informed the media that Harris, who is supposed to be taking reps with the wide receivers this spring, and Callaway have been absent from the team since January.

McElwain didn't discuss why the two players weren't with the Gators, but on Friday, Callaway's attorney, Huntley Johnson, released a statement addressing the situation.

Johnson was firm in stating that Callaway should be with the team.

"There is no good reason why this investigation has not been closed," Johnson wrote in regards to his client. "This allegation has no merit."

According to Johnson's release, Callaway's suspension, which was handed down on Jan. 27, stems from a code of conduct violation in early December.

Both Callaway and Harris are enrolled in classes.
