[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Four questions with … No. 70 Renaldo Garcia

"It would have to be at Vanderbilt (Jan. 25, 1989), that game with the tennis ball situation when it looked like we were going to lose and someone threw the tennis balls at Dwayne Schintzius. That got us into overtime and we won. It was a pivotal win (81-78 in OT). We ended up winning the SEC by a half game or a game. That win was critical. It really brought us together."

Stay classy Vandy

Where he is now: Garcia is the head basketball coach at Sickles High School in Tampa.

1. What was your experience like at the University of Florida?

"II had a wonderful experience at the University of Florida. I got a chance to meet some incredible teammates. I got a chance to play for three different coaching staff. I was fortunate enough to be able to get a chance to learn from all three staffs, and now that I'm a coach in high school, I've been able to incorporate that into some of my coaching philosophy. I think I've used that to my advantage."

2. What part of your game do you feel improved while you were a Gator?

"I would just have to say basically getting a better understanding of execution on the defensive end. That's one thing we put an emphasis on in college a lot more than in high school, following defensive game plans."

3. How has the game changed since you were playing?

"I would say it's a lot more attention. You've got the media, it's definitely taken the game to another level with the attention kids are getting and the emphasis on winning night in and night out. Also, the athletes, they seem to be guys that are playing year-round and they're definitely super skilled and playing well beyond their years."

4. Favorite game at Florida?

"It would have to be at Vanderbilt (Jan. 25, 1989), that game with the tennis ball situation when it looked like we were going to lose and someone threw the tennis balls at Dwayne Schintzius. That got us into overtime and we won. It was a pivotal win (81-78 in OT). We ended up winning the SEC by a half game or a game. That win was critical. It really brought us together."
