Re: [gatortalk] A friend just sent me this : Coaching rumors..

The interesting thing is a year or two ago, Bama had probably 30 of them listed, now there is only a dozen or so.  My guess is the rest are employed by the boosters so it doesn't appear they have an analyst for every position.

If you look at these guys, many are former coaches, either college or high school.  Think about what you could do with those resources.  A single analyst scouting a single position, providing the position coach and player with a detailed report on the tendencies of each team they play.  Not to mention the ability to scout teams 2,3,4 games ahead and begin putting together a game plan.  No wonder Saban et.al. look so well prepared.

Nothing illegal about this and probably a difficult thing to stop.  We are in an arms race regardless - or is that irregardless ;) - of what Jeremy says.  We need more resources and better facilities to continue to attract the elite athletes that are need to compete for championships.

Coach Mac is a great start, I for one am very happy about this hire.  He was on my short list, funny thing though, I never got a call to share it...

You are only allowed 10 coaches.  What Alabama does is hire a slew of people in the Athletic Department with titles like player development or football analyst.  This way, they effectively add 10-15 extra coaches who can't work directly with players, but do a lot of film work and 'teach' some football coaching classes...

It will be interesting to see how big Coach Mac's staff is.  Per Doug Johnson last week on WRUF, he "knows for a fact" that Coach Mac told Foley that if he wants to compete with the likes of Alabama, Mac will need the same size organization as Saban.  I was always under some kind of impression there was a limit to how big the staff could be (per NCAA rules), but again, that's just an impression.  So I'm very curious to see what the new structure will look like.

Apparently Doug Johnson knows Coach Mac through a mutual friend.

"Sorry for the delay in me posting this update but I was trying to track down some more info so here's what I got so far.
  • T-Rob is telling his players and parents that he wants to stay at Florida but right now his concern is who will be the coaches on the defensive side of the ball next year. He wants to work with someone that he's comfortable with and someone that trust him so right now I think we are all waiting to see who Mac hires for the defensive side of the ball.
  • The good news is that T-Rob and McElwain like each other and they got along great on the recruiting trail last week so that's a plus for Florida.
  • I can tell you that T-Rob isn't not recruiting for Auburn or whatever the rumor going around was. T-Rob isn't that kind of person plus Mac would let him go today if that was true.
  • Right now I think it's 50/50 on whether or not he stays.
  • Right now I believe that both Durkin and Lawing will NOT be back next year. I think Lawing will return to South Carolina and eventually retire up there. Lawing is a different guy and he wants to work with people he knows so returning to Carolina is his best option at this point.
  • I honestly have no clue where Durkin will go. I'm guessing maybe Muschamp offers him or job but that's just a guess.
  • As I posted earlier today the word is that Mac has told Mike Summers that he will kept on staff next year and the two feel comfortable with each other.
  • One name to keep an eye on is Arkansas linebacker coach Randy Shannon as his name was brought up to me today about being a potential hire. Shannon is a solid recruiter in South Florida."

I dont see Doug Nussmeier coming on board plus I heard he may be OC at Nebraska..  From what I have been told.. Napier is considered Coach Macs protege' of sorts and is a big reason for Amari Coopers success.

Since we're all just sitting around waiting for the staff to be announced I thought we may as well kill some time discussing some of the rumors that are out there...

Head Coach - Coach Mac

Appears to be a good hire.  Proven offensive mind, has developed QB's, can recruit, and has seen first hand what you need to do to win in the SEC, having won a few championships at Bama as their OC.

OC - Doug Nussmeier

If true, ole Dougie's going to draw some criticism among Gator fans due to his most recent history at Bama and Michigan.  I would like to think that maybe he's just a victim of bad timing and circumstances.  He is close with Coach Mac, brings a lot of experience as an OC, coached in the SEC at Bama, and was obviously well thought of enough to be offered the jobs to begin with.  Given our head coach will be very involved in the offense I think this is one area Mac can afford to take a chance on.

CoOC/Receivers Coach - Billy Nappier

If true, this would be a homerun hire.  Nappier's a proven receivers coach, ace recruiter, has worked with Mac in the past, and our gain would be Bama's loss.  The CoOC title makes sense because that's what it would take to steal him away from Bama.

OL Coach - Mike Summers

If true, it would be nice to have some consistency there, given the circumstances the past few years.  Not known as a great recruiter, but is a proven line coach, who's done a nice job at Florida so far.

RB Coach - Irvin or Harriott

If true, both have the potential to be great recruiters - especially in South Florida, where RB's grow on trees.  Great backs are not something you typically teach, so this is one position we can afford to take a chance on and look to hire an ace recruiter.

DC - Sal Sunseri

If true, like Doug, this hire would draw the ire of a lot of Gator fans due to his awful stint at Tennessee.  He is a great guy, excellent recruiter, proven position coach, knows Mac, and our gain would be FSU's loss.  His lack of success at Tennessee as a DC was hopefully more a result of him walking into a situation where he had very little to work with and he was only there one season.  Given our head coach is an offensive minded coach, I would think that if it's Sal we are going to have to make a run at another proven defensive minded coach to help take some of the burden off.

DB Coach/Recruiting Coordinator - TRob

If true, let's hope his promotion consists of taking over recruiting responsibilities and all defensive backs.  He's a CoDC candidate with a proven DC, but not someone like Sal.  Proven CB's Coach and our best recruiter, but our primary contact to South Florida - which is very important.  He and Nappier would kill it down there.

DL Coach - Tosh Lupoi

If true, depending on who our DC is, this could be another homerun hire.  Nice track record as a line coach, but more importantly he's another beast on the recruiting trail.  This would be another one of those our gain would be Bama's loss.  One of the advantages of Bama loading up on the coaching front is there's a log jam now and guys like Lupoi are there for the taking.
