A freshman in my dorm caught viral meningitis the first week of school while I was at Georgetown.

The GU hospital was literally next door to our dorm and had some of the finest physicians in the world.

He didn't make it a week. His family managed to arrive in time to say goodbye.

It has always blown my mind that early detection plus great facilities still meant no chance for this young man.

As I send my child off to college in two weeks, I wonder, will she be the one to catch the incurable cold.
