College football, above all else, is a tribal sport. Who's winning on the scoreboard is only part of the story. As the season begins this weekend, we decided to study which teams are winning the hearts and minds of America.

Here is a map that shows which top-25 college-football team is the most popular in each county nationwide. The map was created by Facebook, FB +0.58% which tabulated how many Facebook users in each county have "liked" a top-25 team's Facebook page. The map ignores any team not in the preseason Associated Press poll. (Counties that had too few fans are shaded light gray.)

The big winners? The biggest schools. Texas is the most popular top-25 team in 543 American counties, the most of any team, followed by Florida (423) and Ohio State (376).

To be sure, some of those are in areas where Texas likely would trail a home-state team that didn't make the top 25, such as Missouri or Colorado. But the Longhorns also dominate the Lone Star State: Texas A&M and TCU control only one county each there. (LSU also has two Texas counties.)

Likewise, Florida is dominant in its home state over Florida State, Oklahoma routs Oklahoma State and South Carolina cedes little to Clemson. In the West, Oregon is rampant. And three top-25 teams have no counties at all: UCLA, Northwestern and Oregon State, Oregon's archrival.
