Yeah, you're right, and it also varies by device. So a provider may not work on the ESPN Apple TV app, but may work on the ESPN Roku app. I don't know about dish on any of them, but at least, between all our devices, we can usually find a way to see something they're streaming. Luckily, Comcast is supported. (Hmmm, never thought I'd hear myself say I'm lucky to have Comcast.)

Apple TV includes an ESPN app now, so you don't need the iPad anymore. You can just watch it directly.

I can't tell you about Direct TV, but I understand it is being broadcast on ESPN3.  If you can't get it elsewhere, you should be able to watch it on the internet.  If you have an Apple TV and an iPad or late model MacBook Pro, you can watch it on your big screen TV.  (I will.)
