[gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] Lets take care of the Tigers GatorNews from the Palm Beach Post and Miami Herald, Courtesy of JunoGator

I'm so glad someone has brought this issue to light.  I've been up nights struggling with this loss since that game.

Join me, all you who still hold a grudge after 1966, as we finally try to defeat those pesky Tigers!

Let's see, I was 12 at the time.  I remember it well; I watched the Sugar Bowl right after the Bozo/Ranger Hal show.

Florida looks to avenge 1966 Sugar Bowl loss to Missouri

by Jason Lieser

This Saturday's game between No. 8 Florida and Missouri at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (12 p.m., ESPN2) will be the programs' second meeting. The only other time they played was in the 1966 Sugar Bowl, which must go down as one of the most bizarre losses in Florida history.

Current Florida coach Will Muschamp was not even alive yet, so obviously the Gators aren't really looking for revenge.

The Gators entered the game unranked against No. 6 Missouri, and the Tigers ripped them with a 20-0 start. Then it got weird.

Florida QB Steve Spurrier threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the fourth quarter, but the Gators went for two-point conversions each time and failed on all of them. They lost 20-18.

Spurrier, now the coach at South Carolina, put up big numbers that day, completing 27 of 45 attempts for 352 yards and had two touchdown passes against one interception.

He still sounded mad when he was asked today what he remembered about the game.

"I remember we got beat," he said. "It was a game they dominated until the end of the third quarter, then we started throwing every down and our defense just stopped them about every time and we went down and scored three times. For some reason one of the coaches persuaded our head coach Ray Graves to go for two, so we kept going for two and didn't make one.

"I think our extra-point kicker could've made them. It was a little unusual."
