Re: [gatortalk] The Greatest

Percy Beard  should be on the list for nothing else than setting the goal of equal emphasis on excellence for all Gator sports, men or women.

Donovan can't hold a torch to Mary Wise and is hard pressed with Thornqvist as well!  But he is ahead of all the football coaches in his sport.  Certainly the sports draw and money making ability may make his (and the football coaches) impact greater financially and for UF, at a singular sports level we have faired VERY well.  Look what O'Leary has done with lacrosse in just THREE years!

Volleyball:
Florida Team Achievements Under Wise (not to mention a .902 winning percentage!)
  • Seven NCAA National Semifinal Appearances (1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003)
  • 20 consecutive berths to the NCAA Championship
  • 19 NCAA Regional Semifinal Appearances
  • 19 Southeastern Conference Championships (including 18 consecutive from 1991-2008)
  • 12 SEC Tournament Titles
  • Received the program's first national ranking in 1991, highest national ranking in 1996 and 2010 (No. 1) and highest preseason ranking in 2003 (No. 3)
  • More wins than any other program in the nation since 1991
Women's tennis:
With Thornqvist on the sidelines, some of Florida's more significant highlights include two NCAA Team Championships (2003 & 2011), as well as seven Southeastern Conference regular-season titles (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 & 2011) and seven SEC Tournament crowns (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010 & 2011).

I would move Donovan WAY ahead of every football coach.  As far as impact on and results in the sport at UF, no contest.  I don't see how any one coach will ever challenge Donovan.

Okay, I'll throw some fuel on this smoldering ash.  Are we just talking football?  I personally think Foley should get some credit in there somewhere.

You cannot dismiss his impact on Florida athletics.  Obviously, Billy D has to be in there somewhere as well.

1b) Spurrier
2) Donovan

I was with you, Zeb until you mentioned Zook and Dickey.

Well, I figured the poll needed 5 options, and was pretty sure those were the top four and we could have a little fun with #5.

Maybe that is a better argument, who was the 5th best coach in UF football history?

My vote is for Stoops.
