[gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] Stricklin Updates UF Trustees on Return-to-Play Plan - Florida Gators

So, we're going to have fall sports.
The number of fans in the stands will depend on the virus at the time, right?

Stricklin Updates UF Trustees on Return-to-Play Plan - Florida Gators

Stricklin Updates UF Trustees on Return-to-Play Plan
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The 2019-20 collegiate sports calendar came to an abrupt end nearly three months ago. The 2020-21 campaign is slated to begin in another three months or so. A lot has happened since the former, and much will happen in the run up to the latter.

Athletic Director Scott Stricklin said as much Thursday in addressing the University of Florida Board of Trustees at Emerson Hall, as he provided members initial details of how the University Athletic Association intends to bring student-athletes back to campus and return to competition in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All UAA decisions surrounding COVID-19, Stricklin explained, were in consultation with UF Health, campus leadership, state health officials, and the Southeastern Conference's Medical Guidance Task Force.

"With input and assistance from medical experts, a plan has been put in place to promote a safer environment for both student-athletes and athletic department staff," Stricklin said.

The SEC will begin allowing voluntary, in-person workouts Monday for its fall sports teams — for the Gators, that means football, volleyball and soccer — with those sessions to be monitored by strength/conditioning coordinators and sports medicine staff. All athletes will be required to go through physical health screening that will include COVID-19 testing.

"Screen. Test. Protect.," the program is being called.

Athletes in other sports will have the opportunity to return to campus beginning in July, also in a staged approach.

As of Thursday (and certainly subject to change), UF is preparing for athletic events to be played as scheduled, with soccer opening the 2020 season Aug. 21, volleyball falling in Aug. 28, and football kicking off Sept. 5.

The plan, for now, is for those events to be played with fans in attendance. How many fans will be a matter left to medical experts.

"What will our venues look like once those games are played? That's a popular question and one for which there is no clear answer," Stricklin said. "Our goal is to accommodate as many Gator fans as UF Health and state health officials deem appropriate. My sense today, in early June, is that the more time we allow to gather information and receive further medical guidance, the better the chances we have to engage as many fans as possible on campus this fall. By early August, we should have a better idea what fan attendance can look like."

So, the next 78 days will reveal a great deal about what's to come. Beginning next week, though, on-campus preparation for sports next season will be back.

Have to start somewhere.

"We are very much looking forward to the day when we can all be together and celebrate Gator athletics," Stricklin said.
