Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Mississippi State's Stricklin emerges as AD leader

I used to live in the SF Bay Area.  It's nice - but it's very expensive and also the traffic and everything else with the Silicon Valley economy has made things rather miserable.  But you obviously can't beat the weather and the culture of a big city.

I'm with you; I feel that Muir would have been a stellar hire.  But he has no interest in returning to G'ville, even if it is his hometown.  Must have it very nice at Stanford.

Oh I know.  I still would like Muir though.  He's the best option IMO.

Muir has already said no.  Most candidates have backed away because of Foley retaining an Emeritus position and the requirement to keep his lieutenants on staff.  It appears administration wants a sitting Power 5 AD so Foley's lieutenants all withdrew their names.

Florida may be close to replacing Jeremy Foley as athletic director, but it is not a done deal.

Mississippi State AD Scott Stricklin has emerged as the top candidate, although sources close to the situation said he has not been offered the job. As of Monday night, he had yet to meet with the selection committee.

Stricklin was one of the early candidates who the search committee reached out to after Foley in June announced his retirement effective Oct. 1.

The two sides could not agree on the parameters of any discussions. It wasn't until after North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham withdrew his name a day before he was scheduled to be in Gainesville that the committee went back to Stricklin and parameters were worked out.

There were multiple reports Tuesday that Stricklin has become UF's top target, but that it would take something special to lure him away from his alma mater.

Stricklin, 46, has overseen record fundraising since taking over as Mississippi State's athletic director in 2010. During his six-year tenure, Mississippi State has spent $75 million on expansion and upgrades at Davis Wade Stadium, $25 million on the Leo W. Seal Jr. Football Complex and $11.7 million on the Mize Pavilion at Humphrey Coliseum.

The facility improvements have resulted in dividends on the field. In 2015-16, Mississippi State finished 44th in the Learfield Cup Standings, the highest finish ever for a college from the Magnolia State. In 2014-15, eight Mississippi State athletic programs finished their seasons in the Top 25. Mississippi State's football program, under the direction of former UF assistant Dan Mullen, reached the No. 1 ranking in the polls for the first time in school history in 2014.

A Starkville, Miss., native and 1992 Mississippi State graduate, Stricklin began his career in media relations. He served as the primary media relations contact for baseball at Auburn from 1993-98, before moving on as a football contact for Tulane in 1998. For the next four years, Stricklin was an assistant athletic director for marketing and communications at Baylor from 1999-2003.

In 2003, Stricklin was hired as the associate athletic director for communications at Kentucky, overseeing the Wildcats men's basketball program. Stricklin left Kentucky in 2008 to return to his alma mater, Mississippi State, as senior associate athletic director for external affairs, overseeing fundraising.

When former Mississippi State athletic director Greg Byrne left for Arizona in 2010, Stricklin was hired as his successor. Stricklin's ties to his alma mater are strong. In addition to growing up in the state, Stricklin is the son-in-law of Mississippi State basketball legend Bailey Howell.

Byrne was also considered a candidate for the UF job but took his name out of the running last week.
