[gatortalk] The Volsheimers Report (otherwise known as the Orange and White Report)

Show Me My Opponent: Florida

There are reasons to write an actual introduction for this post, but you really don’t need it because you already know: it’s Florida, we hate them, and they can go to Hell.

Stats and stuff that count as a preview for the video clips you’ll see below: Florida has yet to play an opponent of any real substance, but their defense giving up just 4.7 points per game is fairly notable. Their opponents have averaged 1.31 yards per carry thus far, and rush defense is still less prominent than pass defense for Florida. The Gators rank first in opponent passing success rate, which spells trouble for a Tennessee offense that has passed about as easily as a kidney stone.

But, this is all to say Florida’s offense is significantly less terrifying than its defense, and it was this way even before Luke Del Rio was injured by a North Texas sleeper agent working for Butch Jones. (Would you really put it past him at this point?) Florida’s highest yards per carry you’ll see this season will be the 4.97 they’ll top out at after playing UMass, Kentucky, and North Texas. Despite playing defenses that gave up an average of 4.8 yards per carry in 2015 (~95th of 128), the Gators had just four runs of 20 yards or longer. They still don’t seem to have a top running back in place, as evidenced by what is currently a four-way tie for first on the depth chart. This is to say that, barring unusual occurrences, Florida will struggle mightily to find explosive rushing plays against a Tennessee defense that has allowed just two gains of 20 or more yards so far this season.
