Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Notebook: Del Rio on pace to graduate in December

No reason that I can think unless he loses the starting position for some reason besides injury. I guess what's unusual is that he is a redshirt sophomore which means he has 2 more seasons of eligibility after this one.

So I guess this also means he is eligible to transfer after this season with no penalty.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Luke Del Rio is way ahead in the classroom. He's on target to graduate in December with a degree in family and community sciences. He will pursue a master's degree after that.

"Yeah, hopefully get a master's," he said. "I don't know what in yet, but hopefully get a master's. That is the plan."

Young LBs in spotlight

Starting outside linebacker Daniel McMillian could be out for several weeks after sustaining a high ankle sprain in the opener.

"No, (it's not season ending)," McElwain said. "Although you know what, sometimes high ankle sprains last for three and a half years, so I don't know. We'll see. He's a tough guy."

The Gators were already thin at linebacker. With McMillian out, the Gators will be relying on redshirt freshman Kylan Johnson and true freshmen David Reese, Jeremiah Moon and Vosean Joseph to be part of the playing rotation.

"I think it's pretty big (losing McMillian)," senior linebacker Jarrad Davis said. "We've been practicing with that core group for a long time during camp and throughout the summer. We've all been together. These young guys have really done a good job stepping up throughout the summer. It's a big loss losing D-Mac. But at the same time we have lot of guys that are ready to step up. I'm really excited to see what they do this week.

"We've put pressure on them to learn the defense and we've put pressure on them to perform and they've always stood up and performed. They've never had anything that showed us any reason to have concern about them being in the game with us. So we're ready for the next step."

'D' almost dominant

Three plays and three penalties were the difference between the Gators having a good defensive performance and a great one against UMass.

Of the 187 yards given up, 107 came on three pass plays of 53, 24 and 30 yards. And three penalties — two majors (roughing the quarterback and a personal foul for a hand to the face) and an offsides — ignited the Minutemen's touchdown drive.

Wipe out those big plays and penalties, and the Gators would have had a suffocating performance.

"The biggest thing was the penalties," Davis said. "You think about if we don't have those penalties in that drive, we put up, you know, a goose egg on the scoreboard. We let them drive down the field. We kept pushing them. We kept inviting them to keep going down the field with those penalties.

"If we stopped them right there, you never know. We were getting in our groove and then we kind of got out of our element when we got all those penalties. So, we gave up seven points. So just being tighter on our technique, and we'll be all right."

This, that and the other

Del Rio was one of only four FBS quarterbacks and the only SEC QB to complete 65 percent of his passes, throw for 250-plus yards, two touchdowns and zero interception in college football's opening week. … Del Rio joins Rex Grossman (2002) and Chris Leak (2005) as the only Gator QBs since 1996 to complete 65 percent of his passes (minimum 25 completions and 40 attempts) and throw two touchdown passes without an interception. … Sophomore place-kicker Eddy Pineiro became the first UF kicker since Matt Leach (2003 against FSU) to make three field goals of 40 yards or more in a game.
