RE: [gatortalk] Foley's m o

I know we should have a little faith in Foley and his decisions.

He said Rowland's name kept coming up in their searches.

I'm just waiting for next year's NCs in football, basketball, and gymnastics before I judge.  :  )

The world of gymnastics is less fluid than hoops & football, though.  You don't hear/read about coaches hopping programs.  There are only six schools that have won the national title, including UF.

Georgia - in their 2nd year (I think) with a new coach; last one got the boot after taking over for a legend and is now an assistant at LSU

Alabama - just completed their first year with a new coach after their former coach's retirement (she was there for many, many years)

UCLA - coached by a UCLA grad in her 24th year

Utah - coach has just completed his 39th year with the program

Oklahoma - former Iowa State gymnast and HC; has been with the Sooners since 2006

If you were going to try to poach any of those, K.J. Kindler at Oklahoma would be the only one who could be considered elite and young enough to take the helm.  But based on what I've seen of her personality and her style of coaching, I'm thrilled Foley didn't try to throw cash at her.

Arguably, Foley could have gone after the Auburn coach, who was this year's Coach of the Year, and made really huge strides this past year at their program.

But I like this hire - Rowland and Faehn have a long history (so I suspect there was a little influence there), Rowland has experience as an elite-level gymnast (she and Rhonda were teammates on the national team), and as a judge.  Auburn was top-10 on the beam this year (which she specifically coached), and she has strong ties in the gymnastics hotbed of Texas.  I also suspect she plans on keeping Faehn's assistants, which will go a long way for continuity in the program.

We were talking on here the other day about JF's tendency to hire up and comers instead of big names. Nothing proves that more than the hire of an Auburn assistant to coach the 3 national titles in a row gymnastics team.
