Re: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] List of 55 colleges, universities under Title IX investigations over handling of sexual violence

Woody,

I was a little surprised at that as well.  I went to Emory as a Freshman and again for seminary.  I have some knowledge of the culture there.  I cannot imagine that they have  a systemic problem.  Certainly their student athletes hold no particular status so I don’t think there is much alumni pressure to sweep things under the rug in favor of the athletic department.

That being said, could there have been a coach that got out of control?  Possibly.  But I feel very confident that the university would jump on it quickly as soon as it was reported.  Emory is a church related institution.  The bishops have significant influence on what goes on there so I doubt that much grey area is tolerated.  Typically there is usually one or two retired bishops on the faculty there and I feel comfortable that they would immediately get the resident bishops involved if they suspected there was a problem.

To further my point, the Emory culture is somewhat more liberal than mainstream United Methodist church.  That would likely exacerbate the zeal with which they would jump on sexual violence claims and vigorously prosecute perpetrators.

I strongly suspect that there is a back story here and perhaps at many of the other schools listed.  As I look down at some of the other names on the list, I have my doubts about interpreting this too harshly.

The other thing that could be going on here is that complaints of sexual violence that come several days later make it very difficult to evaluate the evidence.  Perhaps all institutions need to do a better job at fostering an atmosphere where students feel more safe in reporting sexual violence, however.

Now F$U, ….

Jerry
