UF president to retire by end of 2013, search to start next month

Friday, at 12:34 by Nathan Crabbe    (Gainesville SUN)

University of Florida President Bernie Machen announced today that he would retire by the end of 2013, leaving an exact date to be determined by the search for his successor.

Machen told the UF Board of Trustees that he would remain until the search was complete, a process that the board chairman later said would start next month and likely take six months to a year. Machen noted that he and his wife, Chris, will have been at the university for nearly a decade by the end of 2013.

"This decision reflects our joint feeling that there's a time for everything in life and it's now our time to pursue the next chapter," he said. "Of course, it will be pursued here in Gainesville and it will be pursued at the University of Florida."

Machen, 68, has served as UF president since January 2004. He laid the groundwork for his departure last year, when trustees extended his contract to the end of 2013. The contract allows both sides to mutually end the deal at any time that year without penalty. It also establishes a post-presidency role for Machen at the university.
