RE: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] UF Eliminates Computer Science Dept., Increases Athletic Budgets. Hmm.

Exactly, which is why I am not buying UF’s spin on this – basically what UF is doing is limiting faculty and students to a community college-level program. No high quality faculty will stay for this, and few CS students will want a degree from that program, especially since the degree with now be a BA instead of a BS. Add this to the decisions to eliminate nursing and disassociate IFAS from UF, and I really have to question Machen’s priorities. Of course, he has been pushed into some really difficult decisions due the draconian budget he has been given by the state to work with, but I think this is a horrible decision, and not the simple “re-organization” being spun by UF.

It is also the primary thing that allows you to keep a job, especially at a tier 1 research institution.  Promotion and tenure is probably 70% or more research.

I think the computer science professors are upset by the less research, bigger teaching load aspect of this. As I'm sure you know, it's the published research that gets you recognized in academia.

Another lesson in don't believe everything you read on the internet, even if it's blogged on the Forbes site.

As Leon says they're combining administrative staff, not tenured professors, and especially not to beef up football.

That blogger can spin it any way he wants. It's a free country. But, it isn't the truth.

Hey, did you hear there are alligators in the sewer in New York City?

I too find this surprising.  However, the computer engineering department is still intact.  It may be that the program is merged with the engineering program.  On the engineering school web site, the computer engineering program was a joint program with the Computer science department.
