I remember them wearing black uniforms before, but definitely not black helmets. Not sure how I feel about that.

Florida football will buck tradition with a different look, donning black tops, black helmets and black pants for the first time in school history for its Nov. 4 game against Arkansas at The Swamp in its Salute to Service game.

The black jerseys will commemorate all branches of the military and first responders by having nameplates on the back of the Florida Gators jersey that characterize the core values of their professions. The five words, chosen by a panel of military members and first responders, include commitment, courage, excellence, honor and integrity.

"I know Gator Nation is excited about the team wearing black uniforms, but I don't want us to lose sight of the intent relative to creating awareness and showing gratitude and appreciation for all branches of our military and first responders," Florida coach Billy Napier said. "We're doing something that's going to be a lot of fun, but ultimately, we're hopeful that we can recognize and show appreciation for a lot of selfless people that have chosen a profession of service and put their lives at risk each day."

In-state rivals Florida State and Miami have donned black jerseys for football, and Florida has worn black jerseys for men's basketball in the past. UF wore orange jerseys in the 1980s and in select games for the past 13 years but has traditionally donned blue tops and resisted wearing black until this season. The different look could serve as being attractive to high school recruits who like wearing different uniform colors and combinations during the course of the season.
