[gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] Gator Evan McPherson energizes playoff run for Bengals

I was watching that game with disappointment since the Titans are Nashville's team.
I didn't realize it was Evan McPherson's kick.
That makes it a little easier to take.
I wasn't really that disappointed, anyway. NFL just isn't college.

Former Florida kicker Evan McPherson's 'called shot' energizes playoff run for Bengals

In three years with the Gators, McPherson made 51 of 60 field-goal attempts (85 percent), including 5-of-8 from 50-plus yards.

CINCINNATI — Evan McPherson stared down the most important kick of his life and drilled it on Saturday, putting the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC title game for the first time in 33 years.

But first, the 22-year-old rookie called his shot.

"So he was talking to (backup quarterback Brandon Allen) when he was going out to kick," quarterback Joe Burrow related with a chuckle. "He gave a little warmup swing and he said, 'I guess we're going to the AFC championship' — before he went out to kick."

McPherson's 52-yarder as time ran out Saturday was his fourth field goal of the day without a miss in Cincinnati's 19-16 win over Tennessee. He is 8-for-8 in two playoff games.

"He has ice in his veins," Bengals coach Zac Taylor marveled.

The kick also was the fourth game-winner of the season for the guy teammates call "Shooter."

"This is my job," McPherson said. "This is what I do for a living. So it's my job to stay cool, calm, collected in moments like those. And I'm just so happy that my team put me in the position to succeed and give me the opportunity to win the game."

The Bengals were counting on that mental toughness and accuracy when they used a fifth-round pick (149th overall) to take him in the NFL draft last spring.

In three years at Florida, McPherson made 51 of 60 field-goal attempts (85 percent), including 5-of-8 from 50-plus yards. He missed just one of 150 extra-point attempts.

Cincinnati was seeking some stability and range after cutting Randy Bullock in midseason in 2020 and finishing with Austin Seibert, who lost the job to McPherson in 2021.

"It was a position for us, I don't know if you want to call it unsettled but we were kind of middle-ground maybe at that spot," Cincinnati special teams coach Darrin Simmons said. "We wanted to up the ante a little bit, knowing we had a quarterback that was probably going to get us in position to score a lot of points. You know, having a good solid kicker, somebody you can count on in tight spots like this is a huge, huge deal for us."

Burrow knows steely-eyed confidence when he sees it.

"We knew exactly what we had as soon as he walked into the building in camp and we just saw how he carried himself," Burrow said. "Obviously everyone at this level can kick through the uprights, but it's how you handle yourself in the locker room that shows us that you have the confidence to go out there and make a kick like this and perform the way he did in a game like this. We knew exactly what kind of guy we had in camp."

Including the playoffs, McPherson has made 36 of 41 field-goal attempts (87.8 percent), including 11 of 13 from 50-plus yards, while converting 49 of 51 PATs.

Two of the field-goal misses came in a wild 25-22 overtime loss to the Packers in Week 5. A 57-yard attempt in the fourth quarter hit the right upright. A 49-yard kick in overtime floated just left in a swirling wind.

He rebounded from his worst day as a pro to make 23-of-25 the rest of the regular season.

McPherson is getting plenty of attention after his called shot and no-doubt kick put the Bengals in the AFC championship game Sunday in Kansas City.

He wasn't born when Cincinnati last won a conference title — only two players on the current roster were alive then — but McPherson is able to appreciate the significance when he sees what's happening in the championship-starved city.

"It's really special just that our team is kind of creating our own legacy," he said. "And I think this Bengal team will be remembered forever. And just the excitement that we brought to the city of Cincinnati, I think is awesome. And I mean, the city's on fire."

[gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: Gators recruiting: 4-star defensive lineman Caden Story includes Florida in his top 3

This will be an interesting recruit. Clemson has been winning in recruiting against UF since Urban Meyer.
Maybe we'll start to turn it back in our favor, now with Billy.

Billy Napier and his staff have less than two weeks before National Signing Day (Feb. 2) and there's still plenty of work to do.

Florida signed nine high school players during the early signing period, including landing five-star safety Kamari Wilson, four-star linebacker Shemar James and four-star cornerback Devin Moore.

The Gators also added a commitment from four-star running back Trevor Etienne, the younger brother of former Clemson star and current Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, during the All-American Bowl earlier this month. Defensive back Miguel Mitchell, the MVP of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic in December, committed to Florida over Tennessee on Sunday.

Coaching hires:Reports: Florida Gators hiring NFL assistant as co-defensive coordinator

Florida officially hosted eight players last weekend and have six players scheduled to take official visits this weekend, including prep quarterback Max Brown.

Here are notes and updates on some the Gators targets heading into the final stretch before signing day.

Caden Story includes Gators in top 3

Caden Story, one of the top unsigned defensive linemen in the nation, is down to three: Auburn, Clemson and Florida. Story will sign at 10 a.m. on National Signing Day.

The 6-foot-3, 282-pound Story from Lannett (Alabama) is rated a four-star recruit and is the No. 27 defensive lineman and the No. 225 overall player in the nation on the on the 247Sports composite.

Story is scheduled to visit Florida next weekend. His older brother, Kristian, is a sophomore safety at Alabama.

Gators visit 3-star QB Max Brown

Napier, tight ends coach William Peagler and offensive analyst Ryan O'Hara visited Brown, a Central Michigan commit from Lincoln Christian School in Tulsa (Oklahoma), on Monday.

The 6-foot-3 dual-threat quarterback threw for 2,750 yards and 41 touchdowns with only four interceptions and rushed for 1,343 yards and 20 touchdowns in 14 games in 2021.

Brown will take an official visit to Florida this weekend. He is scheduled to take an official visit to Washington next weekend.

The Gators announced the transfer of former Ohio State quarterback Jack Miller in December, but do not have any prep quarterbacks in the 2022 class. Four-star quarterback Nick Evers decommitted after Dan Mullen was fired and replaced by Napier. Evers signed with Oklahoma during the early signing period.

Matt McCoy set for final weekend

Creekside three-star offensive tackle Matt McCoy is scheduled to visit on Jan. 28, the final weekend before National Signing Day. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound McCoy, whose older brother Luther is a freshman defensive lineman at Minnesota, was a late bloomer and didn't have any offers until late September.

McCoy is scheduled to visit UCF this weekend and also has taken official visits to Miami, Maryland and Ole Miss.

McCoy posted a picture of himself with offensive coordinator Rob Sale and offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton on Monday.

Gators host intriguing pass catcher Arlis Boardingham

One of the visitors from this past weekend was Birmingham (California) four-star wide receiver/tight end Arlis Boardingham.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder caught 43 passes for 836 yards (19.4 yards per catch) and scored 20 total touchdowns in 13 games in 2021.

Boardingham is scheduled to take an official visit to Oregon this weekend. His other offers include Arizona State, Colorado, USC and Texas.

Napier forced to wait for Georgia's Kirby Smart for Richard Young

Napier was one of several head coaches to stop by Lehigh High School on Thursday to see five-star 2023 running back Richard Young. Unfortunately for Napier, he had to wait for Georgia's Kirby Smart to vacate the premises to get into the school.

Smart arrived in a helicopter and traffic — including Napier— had to be stopped in the vicinity because the school's front lawn was declared a federal landing zone.

Alabama's Nick Saban, Ohio State's Ryan Day and Clemson's Dabo Swinney also have been to see Young this week.

Re: [gatortalk] [gatornews] [SUN]: Louisiana running back Montrell Johnson to reunite with coach Billy Napier at Florida

To add to Oliver's note, " And, helping with knowledge of Napier's system...." I suspect it's also helpful to have players who can model Napier's off-field system.

Re: [gatortalk] [gatornews] [SUN]: Louisiana running back Montrell Johnson to reunite with coach Billy Napier at Florida

I have no idea as to how well Napier coaches.

However, the days where we could have 7 coaches and assistants, draw plays up on a napkin, and go toe to toe with Alabama and Georgia are gone.

Napier has changed the system to enable our UAA to be competitive with our primary SEC rivals, recruiting and on the field.

For that, I am pleased and grateful.

Re: [gatortalk] [gatornews] [SUN]: Louisiana running back Montrell Johnson to reunite with coach Billy Napier at Florida

Very true!  One thing that looks good about Napier is that he did things at UL that NO other Coach has ever done.  Yes, Mullen won a lot of games at MSU, but they had been there before with previous coaches. We all questioned his recruiting prowess, and just assumed it would pick up with the Gator logo on his chest. It didn't!    I think Napier was the best choice for what was available.  He seems to be able to recruit!  Of course, we need to hold judgement for after next year on that.  I think the only other coach I may have been more excited about is Luke Fickel, but he's not an SEC guy.  I wonder how he would recruit here?

For him?  It doesn't…. The only thing that I can think of currently is that we have Bowman & Lingard are the only healthy RB's in the room.  Nayquan is rehabbing.  Don't know what you're going to get him from him this year?  RB depth would be it.  Makes me wonder if they know we're not getting Citizen?

[gatortalk] Bowl Pick 'em results

Bowl games are always unpredictable, but somehow Hal Jarvis went 10-3 to take top honors. In second place were Gene Sanders and Shane Ford at 9-4.

For the whole year including the bowls, John Coyle finished first at 81-64, followed by Dean Tilman at 78-67, and Michelle Piazza, Mike Lloveras and Shawn Lewis at 77-68.

Thanks for playing, may 2022 be a Happy New Year for us all. We need it! And let us Gators hope Santa's gift of Billy Napier portends
good times ahead.

[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Gators head football coach Billy Napier continues to build new staff at Florida

Sherrill seems like a nice pick up.

Peagler seems like a downgrade from Brewster. Is there a story there?

New Gators head football coach Billy Napier had busy holiday season as he continues to fill out his new staff at Florida. Here's a brief look at his most recent hires.

William Peagler — Tight Ends Coach

Peagler will head to Gainesville after spending two seasons as Michigan State's running backs coach, helping the Spartans finish the 2021 regular season with a 10-2 record and reach their third New Year's Six Bowl.

Prior to Michigan State, Peagler was the director of quality control for the offense in 2019 at Colorado.

Peagler spent the 2018 season as Louisiana's director of player personnel and quality control coordinator, helping the Ragin' Cajuns recruit the No. 1 class in the Sun Belt Conference that year.

[gatortalk] Bowling

I would like to send out a thanks to SC, Ark, Ky and those other two teams for avoiding a shutout for the SEC in bowl games. I was concerned for a while.
