Former UF standout Hill dies at 48

Former Florida football player and assistant coach Aubrey Hill died Sunday. He was 48. His death was announced by Florida International University, where he has been an assistant coach since 2017.
Hill played wide receiver for the Gators under Steve Spurrier from 1991-94. After his playing days, he was a graduate assistant at UF under Spurrier and was the Gators' wide receivers coach in 2011.
"He was a very solid football player," former teammate and UF quarterback Shane Matthews said. "Not flashy. Probably not the fastest guy in the world, but caught everything, very reliable. He had a great career here and obviously got into coaching and did a tremendous job there, and affected so many kids' lives in a positive way.
"It's devastating. It's hard to believe. He's one of my favorite teammates of all time. He was just a guy that loved playing football, just a joy to be around. As a quarterback, he's a guy you could count on to do what he's supposed to do and be at the right place at the right time.
"He was just a solid human being and a solid football player."
Hill was in his fourth season as receivers coach at FIU under coach Butch Davis.
"It was a shock to learn of Aubrey's passing tonight after his long battle with cancer," Davis said in a release on the school's website. "Aubrey was loved and adored by so many who saw him not only as a coach, but as an amazing husband and father. We mourn his loss, but we will also hold on to the great memories he left behind and how honored we all were to be a part of his life. We pray for his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
As a player, he helped the Gators to a four-year record of 43-10-1 (.806) and three SEC championships. He totaled 86 receptions and 18 touchdowns during his career and caught a touchdown every 4.78 catches, the third best TD ratio in Gators history. He was a team captain as a senior in 1994.
Following his playing career, Hill served as a Florida graduate assistant from 1996-98. In his first season as an assistant, Florida captured the national championship with a 12-1 mark, capped by a 52-20 victory over Florida State in the Sugar Bowl.
After three years with the Gators he coached at Duke, Elon, Pittsburgh and Miami. Hill returned to Florida in 2011 under coach Will Muschamp as the team's wide receivers coach before resigning shortly before the 2012 season.
After a brief stint at Marshall and four years as the head coach of Miami Carol City where he went 30-16 and led the Chiefs to the 2016 Class 6A state championship. Hill was named the 2016 Miami Dolphins High School Coach of the year and a finalist for the 2016 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year.
"One of the greatest men I've ever been around," Davis told Brett McMurphy of the Stadium Network. "Classy, loved by his players, always had a smile, was upbeat and positive. He made huge impact on so many young men."

She won her first NCAA all-around as a freshman in 2013, the same year Florida won its first NCAA team title. She went on to become Florida's career leader with six NCAA individual event titles, which stands No. 3 all-time among NCAA gymnasts.
The coronavirus pandemic forces the induction ceremony to June 2021 during the Olympic Trials.

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of Feleipe Franks, he's heading back to The Swamp. This time he won't be quarterbacking the Gators, he'll be trying to beat them.
Arkansas, Franks' transfer destination, has been added to Florida's conference-only 2020 schedule along with Texas A&M, the SEC announced Friday.
"The SEC office and Commissioner (Greg) Sankey have worked tirelessly to help its member schools and our student-athletes move forward given unprecedented circumstances; from putting together detailed medical plans, guaranteeing scholarships for athletes who wish to opt-out, to plotting a course for what seasons and schedules could look like," UF athletic director Scott Stricklin said in a school release.
The SEC will announce the complete league schedule, with dates, next week.
The Franks vs. Florida duel certainly adds considerable intrigue to UF's new schedule.
In Franks' up-and-down career as the Gators' starting quarterback, it ended with a painful downer, a dislocated ankle in the SEC opener against Kentucky last season that effectively ended his UF career — and launched Kyle Trask's.
After the big season Trask had, it was obvious to everyone, and especially to Franks, that Franks' time as UF's starting quarterback was over — and he transferred to Arkansas to play for new coach Sam Pittman, probably anticipating he would not be going against his former teammates this fall.
The Gators are 9-2 against Arkansas all time. In the last meetings the Razorbacks clubbed the Gators 31-10 at Fayetteville in 2016.
In his two-plus seasons as the UF starter, Franks threw for 4,593 yards and 38 touchdowns. He had a breakout season in 2018, throwing for 2,457 yards and 24 TDs with only six interceptions.
UF will face Texas A&M for only the fifth time. The series is tied 2-2, with the Aggies winning the last matchup 19-17 in The Swamp in 2017. Eight days later, following a 42-2 loss to Georgia, Florida parted ways with head coach Jim McElwain.
Already on the UF schedule are Kentucky, Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Georgia, Vanderbilt and Missouri.
"Given all the unknowns we face, today's announcements regarding the SEC initial COVID-19 management requirements, along with the identification of two additional opponents in football, provide a solid framework with a goal of giving our teams the opportunity to compete in a healthy environment during the 2020-21 school year," Stricklin said.
The start of the season, originally set for Sept. 5, has been pushed back to Sept. 26. On UF's original schedule, the Gators were scheduled to play at Tennessee on that date.
