25 Best Moments in The Swamp: No. 20 — Wright on cue
June 25, 2019
It was June of 1992 when Steve Spurrier, fresh off Florida's first official SEC title, called The Sun columnist Mike Bianchi with a new name for the stadium that would eventually bear his name.
The Swamp.
In the years that followed, there have been some unbelievable games and players. Sun writers Pat Dooley and Robbie Andreu came up with their rankings of the 25 best moments since 1992 when Spurrier gave it that moniker.
No. 20 — Nov. 25, 1995
Wright on cue
The set-up: The No. 3 Gators came into this game against the No. 6 Seminoles looking to set a school record with an 11th consecutive win that would give Florida its first undefeated regular season in school history.
The moment: The Gators got off to a fast start, with Danny Wuerffel throwing three touchdown passes in the first half to give the Gators a commanding 28-6 halftime lead. But the Seminoles put themselves back in the game in the third quarter, outscoring the suddenly sluggish Gators 18-7. Danny Kanell's 8-yard TD pass to Andre Cooper in the closing minutes of the quarter cut the UF lead to 35-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
The result: In the fourth quarter, the Florida defense, led by Lawrence Wright and the secondary, took control of the game, consistently frustrating Kanell and the Seminoles. The Gators intercepted Kanell three times in the quarter, the final pick coming in the closing seconds when Wright hauled in a tipped ball at the UF 6-yard line to seal the win. A week later, UF beat Arkansas 34-3 in the SEC title game to advance to the national championship game against Nebraska.
The quote: "Wright's interception may have closed the door, but there was zero chance Florida State was winning that game, given how Florida was playing at the time and the pent-up frustration the Gators — with so much at stake, the record crowd in the house, their recent record in the series — were set to unleash on the Seminoles that day. The game, I thought, was basically over after FSU scored to make it 28-14 midway through the third and Wuerffel immediately negated the score with a 74-yard touchdown to Ike Hilliard the first play of the next series. Wright's pick finished it off, but his post-game quote — "If you ain't a Gator, you're Gator bait!" — was more memorable than that play." — Chris Harry, Floridagators.com
