25 Best Moments in The Swamp: No. 20 — Wright on cue

June 25, 2019

Lawrence Wright. [File]

It was June of 1992 when Steve Spurrier, fresh off Florida's first official SEC title, called The Sun columnist Mike Bianchi with a new name for the stadium that would eventually bear his name.

The Swamp.

In the years that followed, there have been some unbelievable games and players. Sun writers Pat Dooley and Robbie Andreu came up with their rankings of the 25 best moments since 1992 when Spurrier gave it that moniker.

No. 20 — Nov. 25, 1995

Wright on cue

The set-up: The No. 3 Gators came into this game against the No. 6 Seminoles looking to set a school record with an 11th consecutive win that would give Florida its first undefeated regular season in school history.

The moment: The Gators got off to a fast start, with Danny Wuerffel throwing three touchdown passes in the first half to give the Gators a commanding 28-6 halftime lead. But the Seminoles put themselves back in the game in the third quarter, outscoring the suddenly sluggish Gators 18-7. Danny Kanell's 8-yard TD pass to Andre Cooper in the closing minutes of the quarter cut the UF lead to 35-24 heading into the fourth quarter.

The result: In the fourth quarter, the Florida defense, led by Lawrence Wright and the secondary, took control of the game, consistently frustrating Kanell and the Seminoles. The Gators intercepted Kanell three times in the quarter, the final pick coming in the closing seconds when Wright hauled in a tipped ball at the UF 6-yard line to seal the win. A week later, UF beat Arkansas 34-3 in the SEC title game to advance to the national championship game against Nebraska.

The quote: "Wright's interception may have closed the door, but there was zero chance Florida State was winning that game, given how Florida was playing at the time and the pent-up frustration the Gators — with so much at stake, the record crowd in the house, their recent record in the series — were set to unleash on the Seminoles that day. The game, I thought, was basically over after FSU scored to make it 28-14 midway through the third and Wuerffel immediately negated the score with a 74-yard touchdown to Ike Hilliard the first play of the next series. Wright's pick finished it off, but his post-game quote — "If you ain't a Gator, you're Gator bait!" — was more memorable than that play." — Chris Harry, Floridagators.com

Editor's note: You have one Swamp game moment that comes to mind? Tell us what it is.Maybe it's already on our Top 25 list. We'll update readers on top moments from fans as the countdown proceeds.

Florida's 2020 class is in the midst of arguably its most productive stretch on the recruiting trail thus far.

After landing three commitments over the past weekend, the Gators continued to receive good news Monday when Lakeland cornerback Fenley Graham verbally committed to coach Dan Mullen and UF.

The 5-foot-9 Graham, ranked by 247Sports as the No. 57 cornerback in the 2020 class, opted to shut his recruitment down and commit to the Gators over offers from Miami, Kentucky and North Carolina, among others.

With Graham's commitment, which is non-binding until he signs a letter of intent, the Gators hold commitments from 17 prospects in the 2020 class.

Gators flip highly recruited OLB Derek Wingo from PSU

Florida flipped a heavily recruited outside linebacker, and one of the top in-state prospects, from Penn State University on Saturday.

Derek Wingo, ranked the No. 24 overall prospect from the state of Florida by 247Sports, committed to the Gators just hours after de-committing from the Nittany Lions, according to Wingo's Twitter account.

"I would like to thank Coach Franklin and the entire Penn State staff for giving me an opportunity, and I am thankful for all the relationships that have been built between friends and fans. At this time, I feel that I need to make the best decision for me and my family and recommit from Penn State University," wrote Wingo. "Some people do not understand how hard it can be to make a college decision at such a young age, realizing that one choice will affect the rest of your life. With that being said I would like to officially shut down my recruitment and announce that I'm 100% committed to the University of Florida."

Wingo, a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder out of noted in-state powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas, is ranked the No. 11 outside linebacker in the 2020 class.

With the additions of Wingo, Tre'Vez Johnson and Lamar Goods, Florida's 2020 class has moved up from No. 11 to No. 7 in the 247Sports rankings in the span of 48 hours. The Gators now have a total of 16 prospects committed in the 2020 recruiting class.

[gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: Dooley: There’s Saban, then there’s everybody else in ranking SEC coaches

Ouchie!

8. Will Muschamp, South Carolina.

This is a big season for Muschamp, who is slowly building a team that could contend for, well, the Citrus Bowl.
