Franks leads Florida to win 41-14, ending five-year losing streak to Florida State

They all proceeded to the where the UF fans were still boisterously cheering at Doak Campbell Stadium. Defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and tight end R.J. Raymond jumped into the stands and led the team and the fans in a victorious chant, followed by their tradition of singing "We are the Boys from old Florida."
It was the first time since 2012 that Florida was able to celebrate a victory over its in-state rival Florida State. The No. 11 Gators topped the Seminoles 41-14 on Saturday.
"Nobody on our team has beaten Florida State before," quarterback Feleipe Franks said, "and we came out and battled, and it definitely ranks at the top."
The Gators piled on five touchdowns on the day, and they compiled over 500 yards of offense for the third straight game.
Junior tailback Lamical Perine accounted for 129 of Florida's 282 rushing yards. His performance was highlighted by a second-quarter touchdown run that saw him burst through a hole on the left side and zip down the open field for a 74-yard score.
And despite eight Florida State penalties through the first two quarters of play, the contest was close at the half with Florida carrying a 13-7 lead.
The Gators extended their lead with 10:53 left in the third quarter, however, as another costly penalty on the Seminoles gave Florida a fresh set of downs. An unsportsmanlike conduct on FSU defensive back Stanford Samuels gifted the Gators a first and goal at the FSU five-yard line. It led to the Gators' second touchdown, a three-yard pass from Franks to wide receiver Josh Hammond.
"All week, we weren't worried about this game. We knew we were the better team," Gardner- Johnson said. "We knew they were the most undisciplined team in America, so we were just going to take advantage of every little opportunity we had. That's what we did."
Defensive ends Jachai Polite and Jabari Zuniga headlined a Florida defense that recorded its fourth five-sack game of the season.
Polite had a strip sack of FSU quarterback Deondre Francois, which was recovered by defensive end CeCe Jefferson. It led to a 22-yard touchdown catch by Trevon Grimes on the very next play to give the Gators a 27-7 lead.
Grimes, a transfer from Ohio State, combined with Ole Miss transfer Van Jefferson for 210 of the Gators' 254 passing yards.
And despite two promising touchdown drives by the Seminoles -- one that included a one-handed grab in the end zone by running back Cam Akers, -- the Gators proved too much down the stretch. It was one of their most complete games of the season as they scored 28 points in the second half and held Florida State to one of 14 on third down.
That, coupled with Florida State's self-inflicted wounds led to its collapse at home to culminate a 5-7 season.
"Disappointing loss. Disappoint season," FSU coach Willie Taggart said. "I think everybody in that locker room is hurting."
The loss presumably ended the Seminoles' chances of making a bowl appearance for the 37th-straight year, which was an NCAA record.
And Florida could be on its way to a major bowl game in Mullen's first season as head coach.
"I'm trying to go to a New Year's Six bowl, so that'd fun," Franks said. "Our guys deserve it."

Ranked No. 11 in the latest College Football Playoff Poll, the Gators are in position to play in one of the major bowl games awarded to the top 12 teams in the country.
They just need to win their regular-season finale against in-state rival Florida State.
That should be all the motivation Florida needs when it travels to Tallahassee to try to snap a five-game losing streak against the unranked Seminoles on Saturday at noon.
The Seminoles have fallen far short of expectations in their 5-6 season, but don't expect an easy victory for the Gators (8-3), who are favored to leave Doak Campbell Stadium with a win.
"None of that really makes much of a difference with whatever the records are for either team," Florida coach Dan Mullen said. "You've just got to go out there and you've got to play a great game. Guys that have grown up playing against each other, that know each other, is what makes rivalry games a lot of fun. The competition, neighbor-against-neighbor competition here in the state of Florida. It will be a great challenge for us."
One challenge for Florida will be neutralizing defensive end Brian Burns, the Seminoles' elite 6-5, 235-pound edge rusher.
Burns is part of a Seminoles defense that has been relatively pedestrian overall, ranking 76th in the nation in total defense and 116th against the pass.
But he has been a standout — leading the Seminoles with 10 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss this season.
"He might be the best pass rusher we've seen all year," Mullen said. "He's got length, he's got speed, he's got size, can come off the edge, causes all kinds of problems for you. I don't know that we've faced a pass-rusher like that this year."
The Gators have a game plan in place for Burns, however, which includes knowing where he is on the field and mixing up their protection.
"Just trying to chip him," running back Lamical Perine said. "Just do little things like that to get him off set. Once he gets up field we can just stop him and he won't make a big impact on the play, on third down and stuff like that."
That will be key in ensuring Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks carries over the production from the past two outings. He completed 19 of 27 passes for 274 yards and three passing touchdowns against Idaho last week and rushed for two touchdowns against South Carolina the week before.
"You can tell [Franks has] improved from last year," FSU coach Willie Taggart said, "and I think Coach Mullen and his staff has done a great job of playing to his strength, and he's doing that with the entire offense. That's helping them be successful."
The Gators have outscored their past two opponents 98-41 and have two consecutive games with at least 500 yards of total offense.
And their 13th-ranked pass defense will face a Seminoles offensive line that hasn't been able to protect its quarterbacks all year. Starter Deondre Francois has been sacked 24 times, and his backup James Blackman has been sacked six times in three games. It could be an ideal matchup for Florida's explosive defensive ends in Jachai Polite and Jabari Zuniga, who have combined for 23.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks this season.
Heading into Saturday's rivalry with his team's bowl game hopes still alive and a 36-year bowl streak on the line, Taggart will have the Gators on his mind even as he sits down for his Thanksgiving meal.
"My favorite side dish is gator meat," he said.

Carol City running back Nay'Quan Wright, one of the top prospects in South Florida for the 2019 recruiting cycle, announced on Twitter that he committed to UF.
"Every next level of your life will demand a different version of you ! #GoGators" Wright wrote in his tweet.
Wright, a 5-8, 185-pound running back out of Opa Locka, is rated as the No. 15 running back and No. 38 overlal player in Florida regardless of position in this year's recruiting cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite ranking. He chose Florida over Alabama, Florida State and Georgia among a slew of Football Bowl Subdivision offers.
Wright is ranked second among South Florida running backs in the 2019 class, behind only University School's Kenny McIntosh, a Georgia Bulldogs commit.
Wright played a large role in leading the Carol City Chiefs to a 10-3 record, a District 16-6A title and an appearance in the Region 4-6A semifinals where the Chiefs ultimately lost to Central.
Florida's recruiting class now ranks 21st nationally and has 16 verbal commitments. Commitments are non-binding until a player signs a national letter of intent either during the early signing period or on National Signing Day.
