Re: [gatortalk] Softball, wow!

I don't claim to completely understand it, but Bailey Castro had been fair-to-middling at the plate last year until she adopted that technique.  Afterward, her bat was on fire for the Regionals, Supers, and WCWS.  This year she had even more HRs than Lauren Haeger and was on a tear until she got sick with the flu about a week before the post-season.

I am still puzzled by this behavior.  It seems that the batters have to "hurry" to get the bat back into a hitter stance.  I think I had both eyes on the ball in a regular batters stance when I played softball years ago.

To answer about the "appearing to bunt but clearly not going to" - the batter is "squaring up" to get a better look at the trajectory and spin of the ball.  Essentially getting both eyes clearly on the pitch as it heads towards the plate.

I don't know all the rules regarding substitutions, but the team is allowed a certain number of substitutions (pinch runner, pinch hitter).  That part is still past me.

Pitchers can be taken from the game and returned, but there are certain rules on that. Say for instance last night when they pulled Ocasio for Gourley, if they then pulled Gourley for Haeger, and then subsequently pulled Haeger, the only pitcher that could return is Ocasio.

As for slappers, it's pretty unique to baseball probably because you couldn't possibly make adjustments on the run at the speed men throw. There's only one player in baseball that was almost a slapper that I can recall - Ichiro Suzuki.

One of the articles said the Gator coach made a boo boo by not putting someone back in the Game. Anyone know what that was about???

Well I do know that pinch running is just like it never happened. Batter can go back in. Seven innings is regulation. Anything beyond that is extra innings.

Now I don't really understand the DH rule, which they call designated Player. So last night the pitcher batted and so did Lauren as the Dp, so apparently one  defensive player did not bat. Hard to keep straight. But we'll be watching tonight for sure.

I don't get that.  Nor do I get running halfway down the third base line to "slap hit" the ball.

What is that all about?

I still like softball.  Don't get me wrong, but I just don't get the rules yet.

Take out the pitcher, then bring her back in?  Just what inning is this thing supposed to end? After 7?  8? 9?  Last night was extra innings, I get that.  But I've seen a couple of games go 8.

Pinch runner and the hitter comes back in?

Yes, that was bad base running on Michigan's part--thank goodness.

Why do so many of them show bunt when they come up to bat? Sometimes it's really obvious that they wouldn't be bunting. I don't get it.

Me too.  That was amazing.

If the runner on third for Michigan had taken off, the game would have turned out a lot differently.

I hope we score a lot of runs tonight early.  My heart is on a defibrillator after that.
