Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Katie Turner, Bri Wade in vital recruiting roles on Billy Napier's Florida football staff

Georgia has had a long suffering basketball program.  Other than a brief stint with Tubby Smith, Georgia has not had a coach with an overall winning record since 1920.  Georgia fans would soil their pants just to have a coach with as good of a record as Mike White.  I am confident that White's agent was looking for a face-saving place to land for him before Florida terminated his contract.  Mike White is a good coach, but not good enough for Florida basketball.

Understood, but if the point of the author was to mention how Florida was undermanned, it seems to make sense to mention all the players who were unavailable.

I'd forgive leaving out Keyontae, as he has not played all year, but Jitoboh was an important contributor during the year and helped to keep Castleton fresh.

Stricklin ultimately hired San Francisco's Todd Golden to replace Mike White, who surprised the Gators last Sunday by bolting after seven season for Georgia.

Now the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, Donovan said he does not know Golden but offered to be a resource as the 36-year-old aims to help the Gators again become an SEC contender.

"I've always said the same thing, whether it's (alma mater) Providence College or whether it's Florida: if they need me to help, I'd be more than happy to do that," Donovan told reporters Friday in Phoenix. "But I also understand that everybody's got jobs to do and I would just want to support them. They really have been great in terms of keeping me involved in different ways I think maybe I can be useful to try to help."

Donovan led the Gators to two national titles (2006-07) and six SEC titles (2000, 2001, 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2014). His name on the court in the O'Connell Center — Florida's home court.

Stricklin did not seek advice on specific candidates, Donovan said, rather what it would take to return the program to national prominence after it had grown stale under White. The Gators were 142-88 and reached four straight NCAA Tournaments until missing out this season.

UF (20-13) visits Xavier (19-13) at 1 p.m. Sunday during the second round of the NIT.

"I talked to them quite a bit during this process," Donovan said. "Scott Stricklin — who is the athletic director there who took over for the athletic director who hired me, Jeremy Foley — we've had an unbelievable relationship. They kept me very, very much involved."

Donovan hopes his insight helped Stricklin find the right fit in Golden.

"I do think it's a unique situation there," Donovan said. "I think it's a really good situation because of the people that are there. One of the guys that was my trainer was on the search committee, so he had talked to me quite a bit. I think that they were trying to look for a profile."

Golden was 57-36 during three seasons at San Francisco, including a 24-10 record this season to lead the Dons to their first NCAA Tournament bid since 1998.

It's official. Florida announced it has hired San Francisco head coach Todd Golden as the next UF men's basketball head coach.

ESPN's Pete Thamel was first to report that the Gators were zeroing in on Golden

UF's accelerated interest in the 36-year-old Golden came on the heels of San Francisco's 92-87 defeat Thursday night at the hands of Murray State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Under Golden's watch, San Francisco (24-11) earned the school's first NCAA Tournament bid since 1998 and first at-large bid since 1982.

"I'm energized by the opportunity to lead an elite program at Florida, and I'm ready to get started," Golden said. "Florida has a championship-level athletic department, university and men's basketball program, and I embrace the standard of excellence at Florida and the passion of Gator Nation. We couldn't be more excited about what the future holds in Gainesville."

5 things to know:Florida hiring basketball coach Todd Golden

Aftermath:Florida Gators discuss Mike White's decision to depart: 'It was a really emotional group'

Senior strength:UF's Al Pinkins talks about Colin Castleton continuing to play through shoulder injury.

David Whitley: Georgia hiring Mike White is good for the Florida Gators and the Bulldogs

Golden led the Dons to a 57-36 record over three seasons as head coach, including 20-win seasons in both 2019-20 and 2021-22. His background includes time coaching within the Southeastern Conference and the Ivy League before his time in the West Coast Conference.

Golden said he wanted to thank "the University of San Francisco, Joan McDermott and Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald for the incredible support they've given me over the past six years at USF and the opportunity to lead a special group of young men."

Florida was in the market for a men's basketball head coach after Mike White announced Sunday he was leaving to take the job at SEC rival Georgia. Al Pinkins is leading the Gators in the NIT as interim coach.

"We're incredibly excited about bringing in Todd, who is an innovative, relationship-oriented coach, to lead our men's basketball program," athletic director Scott Stricklin said. "Todd brings a smart and analytics-driven approach to the game and a relational approach to leadership that puts student-athletes first. He has a wide range of experience, particularly for a coach his age, and brings an outstanding track record and high level of integrity to the job."

Golden was hired as head coach at San Francisco in March 2019. Prior to being named the Dons' head coach, Golden spent three seasons as the associate head coach under head coach Kyle Smith. During that time, he served as the Dons' recruiting and defensive coordinator.

Over the past three seasons, the WCC has been on average KenPom's strongest-rated conference outside of the traditional power-six leagues and the American Athletic Conference.

Before joining Smith's staff in 2016, Golden spent two seasons at Auburn under Bruce Pearl. He spent the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach on Smith's staff at Columbia.

He played college basketball at St. Mary's College in California and helped the Gaels to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. As a senior point guard, he ranked second in the nation with a 3.68 assists-to-turnovers ratio and led the West Coast Conference with a .574 3-point field goal percentage. Golden finished his career as the Gaels' all-time leader in free-throw percentage (.852) and eighth with 269 career assists.

After earning his degree in business administration, Golden played two years of professional basketball for Maccabi Haifa in Israel's top division. In 2009, he was co-captain of the USA Open Team, coached by Pearl, that won gold at the Maccabiah Games.

Golden is married to Megan York, who was a four-year volleyball standout at St. Mary's and the WCC's Co-Freshman of the Year in 2007.

Florida icon Billy Donovan assists in Gators' coaching search leading to Todd Golden

GAINESVILLE — Scott Stricklin's search for a new men's basketball coach led Florida athletic director to seek advice from the man who led the Gators to unprecedented success: Billy Donovan.

Donovan, who left Gainesville for the NBA in 2015, was happy to help.

Florida coach Billy Donovan cuts off a piece of the net after the Gators beat Kentucky March 8, 2014, to finish 18-0 in SEC play.

There was an article in the Orlando Sentinel about hiring Todd Golden at the recommendation of Billy Donovan. But, it was blocked by the pay wall.

Did anyone see it?
