Re: [gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: Gators selected top seed for NCAA Gymnastics Championships

Yes, the injuries are worrisome. I'm just glad we have a resident gymnastics expert here to share your knowledge with us!
What do you think about Athens as the site? Aside from never wanting to go there and be stained for life, I would think we have the advantage over OK in being familiar with the venue.

Whitley: 'Project Des' underway for Florida football program

David Whitley
Gator Sports
Florida freshman defensive lineman Desmond Watson during a drill at the Sanders football practice fields on campus.

Florida's spring practice has wrapped up, and one number generated more curiosity, conversation, anticipation and speculation than any other:

432.

That's what the scale showed when freshman Desmond Watson stepped on it. Visions of dominant, space-eating defensive tackles like William "The Refrigerator" Perry started dancing in fans' heads.

The Fridge was a mere 330 pounds. Watson is an entirely different appliance.

The early enrollee might be the heaviest player in Division 1 history, which could be good or not so good. Good if he drops down to a svelte 375 or so and harnesses some crazy skills for a guy that size. Not so good if the Project Des doesn't pan out.

"Our first goal is for him to lead a healthy lifestyle," Florida strength coach Nick Savage said.

Project Des is a nutrition and conditioning program that could create a monster of a football player. Success will ultimately depend on the player, which is where another number comes in:

21.

Those are the strange digits on Watson's jersey. Strange because Deion Sanders wore No. 21. Cris Collinsworth wore 21.

Why Desmond Watson wears No. 21

Defensive tackles are not supposed to wear flashy numbers like 21.

Watson's mother wore it when she played basketball. Her son wears it partially in her honor, but primarily for his 9-year-old brother, Dyson. He suffered a stroke four years ago that permanently altered his life.

"He can't run. He can't walk. He can't talk," said Deonzia Woullard, the boys' mother. "He's on a feeding tube, but he still has a whole personality."

Dyson loves to watch football, especially when his big brother's playing it.'

Did we say big?

With all due respect to Steve Spurrier, there's probably never been a bigger man on campus. But be not deceived by the digits 4-3-2.

"People see that number and think 'My 600-lb. Life,'" said Evan Davis, Watson's coach at Armwood High.

Like Watson, the stars of that show hope to get in better shape. But it's doubtful any of them are weight-room legends for their ability to squat hundreds of pounds.

"His ass was six inches off the floor," Davis said. "He has flexibility and hip movement you don't see in a guy that size. He's a stupid athlete for how big he is."

Project Des is designed to excavate that athlete. What's the first goal?

"We'd like to get him under 400 pounds," Savage said.

Coaches don't know what Watson's ideal playing weight will be. His thighs are bigger than the average lineman was when Spurrier was in school. His rear end could qualify for its own zip code.

But he's not that fat, he's quite athletic

The thing is, he's not that fat.

"His dad always said, 'How in the world did I get a son shaped like his mom?'" Woullard said.

His father is 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds. His mother weighs about 250, which she attributes to COVID-19 inactivity and having six kids.

Desmond was actually the smallest of her children at birth — 8 pounds, 1 ounce. The genetics quickly kicked in and he became Des the Giant of pee-wee football.

Woullard remembers one game where an opposing player ended up in her son's arms. Desmond lifted the kid up and the crowd yelled, "Nooo, Des!"

"They thought he was going to slam him down," she said. "But he laid him down like a baby in a cradle."

Watson wore No. 99 until four years ago. His brother was a healthy 5-year-old. There were no warnings he was about to suffer a stroke that would relegate him to life in a wheelchair.

Florida doesn't allow players to talk to the media until they've played, but you can imagine the impact Dyson's stroke had.

"You see your little brother being a normal kid," Woullard said. "Then he's trapped in a body that doesn't work."

She gave her son a speech:

"Be his arms. Be his legs. They can't move the way he wants them to. Let him do that through you."

The biggest obstacle Watson had in high school was finding size 17 shoes and a pair of sweatpants that would fit.

"We tried to get him in some triple XLs," Davis said. "They wouldn't even go over his thighs."

Finding gear isn't a problem at Florida, but the game is certainly more of a challenge. There was scrimmage video of Watson collapsing the offensive line, but there's no guarantee Project Des will produce a football monster.

"That's up to him," Savage said. "But there's enough there to be a dominant football player."

What Florida has right now is a freshman with one of the more unique football chassis anyone's ever seen. It's too early to tell if there's a motor to match, though there is a clue.

It's a tattoo that stretches down Watson's left forearm. It says "Dyson 21."

The number when he steps on the scale will always get the most attention. But if Watson truly makes it big, No. 21 is what will really have counted.

Re: [gatortalk] Wait til Next Year - Hoops

Actually I was hoping to see the headline "Gators part ways with White" today. That in my opinion would be the best way to improve the Gators next year.

I had hoped Dontay Basset would have stayed and continued to improve.

So, where will we get points?

We have one recruit coming in, a talented shooting guard.

Maybe Ques Glover improves markedly, as Tre Mann did this year. Maybe.

Locke has improved his ability to drive the rim, but still is a spot shooter.

I suspect next year will be an uglier version of this year's team.

Re: [gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: Gator gymnasts place third at SEC Championship meet

It was sad to watch. They had a fall or severe mistake in every event. Very uncharacteristic for the Gators. Hopefully, now they have it out of their system and on to nationals.

GoGators!!!

When I couldn't find anything at all about the gymnastics team last night, or early this morning, I was afraid something like this had happened.
Like I said, let's get the bugs out now. NCAAs in April is the place to win it all, next.

Gator gymnasts place third at SEC Championship meet

Special to Gatorsports.com
Florida gymnast Ellie Lazzari competes on the beam during a meet against Kentucky at Exactech Arena in Gainesville last month. She claimed a share of the SEC Championship beam title Saturday with teammate Alyssa Baumann .

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. —The Florida gymnastics team, the SEC regular-season champion and the SEC Championship meet's top seed, finished third after some struggles Saturday in the Von Braun Center.

Florida never led after a fall or major break on each rotation.

"It wasn't one of the Gators' best meet," UF coach Jenny Rowland said. "The momentum [made it] hard to continue to move forward throughout the evening, which makes for a really challenging competition.

"On beam, the momentum picked up. We had five really solid hit routines after [Payton Richard's fall], so momentum was flowing, momentum was going forward."

Alabama claimed its 10th title and first since 2015 at 197.875. LSU was second at 197.775. Florida was third with a season-low 196.975. Rounding out Saturday's results were Kentucky (196.825), Auburn (196.275), Missouri (196.125) and Arkansas (195.60).

LSU led all teams on vault (49.625) and floor (49.50). Alabama had top total on bars (49.425) and Florida again led on beam (49.525). Florida was forced to count a fall on bars for the first time since 2010.

Florida's Trinity Thomas, the nation's top all-arounder, was limited to just uneven bars Saturday. She injured her ankles during uneven bars warm-up at Alabama on March 5.

A pair of Gators were among a four-way tie for first on beam. It was the third consecutive SEC beam title for senior Alyssa Baumann, becoming the first in the event's 40-year history to win three beam titles. Her winning marks were 9.975 (2018) and 9.95 (2019, 2021).

Freshman Ellie Lazzari is the first freshman to claim a share of the beam title since Baumann won 2018 title.

"I just wanted to finish out strong, and [with it] being my freshman year, I just wanted to soak everything in and experience all the amazing energy in the arena, so I was really excited about my performance," Lazzari said.

"I always know that this team has my back, and I will always have theirs, and I just want to pick up the momentum and get the fire going, so that's what I did."

Florida finds out where it will head for NCAA Regional Championship action Monday. Four sites will play host to NCAA Regional action the first weekend of April. The reveal for the regional fields is at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.

"I really am 100 percent confident that this team has the courage to take the step forward and continue to do what they've been doing, and training with that confidence and conviction," Rowland said.

"(We will) reset, refocus, and that's what these Gators are really good at. They have that strength, they have that courage, and I know this is gonna sting a lot for them, but it's going to give them that little fuel to continue to take those steps forward and persevere for a couple more meets. That's what we have ahead of us, and I know the Gators are going to finish strongly."

SEC honors

Four Gators earned All-SEC or SEC All-Freshman in Saturday's competition.

The All-SEC Team is comprised of the student-athletes with the top two event scores (including ties) in each session of the SEC Championships. The All-Freshman team is comprised of the freshmen student-athlete with the top score (including ties) on each event in each SEC Championships' session.

Alyssa Baumann, Beam

Leah Clapper, Beam

Ellie Lazzari, Beam, (Freshman All-Around, Beam team)

Megan Skaggs, Bars

"I was glad that I was able to do that beam routine because we really needed it at the time," Baumann said.

"It was a goal going into this meet to win beam again so I was happy I was able to do that."

SEC Scholar-Athlete: Leah Clapper

Earlier Saturday, junior Leah Clapper was named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This is the fourth such honor for the Gator program and Clapper is the first to receive the award since Alex McMurtry claimed the 2017 and 2018 honors.

[gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: Gator gymnasts place third at SEC Championship meet

There is no score for Gymnastics.

Did Florida withdraw due to covid issues?

Thomas still limited as No. 1 Gators gymnastics team heads to SEC Championship meet

Graham Hall

Special to The Sun

Florida may be without the services of star Trinity Thomas at today's SEC Championship meet.

Having dominated the field this season, the No. 1-ranked Florida gymnastics team turns its attention to asserting said supremacy over the SEC once again when it competes at SEC Championships in Huntsville, Alabama, beginning with Session I of the meet at 3:30 p.m. today before Session II at 8 p.m.

The Gators are in the latter half of the dual-meet along with LSU, Alabama and Arkansas. Florida, as the top seed, has the Olympic rotation today, meaning UF will compete in the order of vault-uneven bars-beam-floor.

The preparation doesn't change, possibly because it's nothing new for the Gators (8-0) — UF has won three consecutive SEC regular-season titles. But the anticipation does, and it isn't just because Florida, like all spring and winter athletes, couldn't see through the 2020 campaign.

"This meet I would say we prepare very similar to any dual-meet we have throughout the regular season. However, it's something that I would say, this team, the excitement is elevated times five," UF coach Jenny Rowland said. "Being on podium, I think that's the biggest difference for this team. They love competing on podium."

But the abrupt end to last season does come into play, too; the Gators had spent countless hours fine-tuning and perfecting their craft without a chance at realizing their goal, let alone the conference championship or even the final regular season, which would have been Senior Night for four gymnasts who never put on a orange and blue leotard again on Florida's competition floor.

There's undoubtedly some elation in knowing these Gators will see the season through.

"It's something that this team was not able to experience last year," Rowland said. "So we're looking forward to definitely making the most of it."

The Gators arrive in Huntsville having registered three of the top-10 scores in the nation, including the No. 1 mark of 198.275 in the home finale Feb. 26 against Auburn.

Though it sounds as if UF's top gymnast, junior Trinity Thomas, will be limited for Saturday's session after she didn't compete in Florida's win March 5 at Alabama due to a pre-meet ankle injury she suffered in her uneven bars warm-up.

"Trin's doing OK. She's making baby steps everyday," Rowland said. "I can't guarantee — I don't foresee her doing everything this weekend, but we still have a couple more days of practice, and when Trinity feels good and she gives us the green light, it's a go."

It may not be Saturday, however, so UF once again must be ready to compete regardless, a decision her teammates and head coach fully support.

"If it's this weekend, great. If it's just continuing to move in the right direction and be ready for (NCAA) Regionals, that's great as well," Rowland continued. "I know she's got the team's back, the team's got her back, but we've got a couple more days."

Without her two weeks ago — though her presence was surely missed — the Gators hardly missed a beat in their last trip to the state of Alabama.

Alyssa Baumann claimed her second win on floor of the season with a 9.975, equaling her collegiate best, while Megan Skaggs shared the beam win with Bama's Luisa Blanco; the latter would go on to win the all-around title, while Skaggs scored a 39.575, good for second and just shy of her collegiate best, too.

When it comes to stepping up when someone goes down, the Gators haven't missed a beat this season.

The depth and talent are apparent, but the cohesion is arguably the collective's best asset, and it's one the Gators will rely on when the spotlights come on Saturday night.

"We're really emphasizing the fact that the consistency of this team is unbelievable," Rowland said. "The confidence that this team has in each other is really unbelievable, and really continuing to be mindful to focus on the details as we go throughout our season and now into the postseason."

Note: Georgia pulled out of the competition because of COVID-19 issues within the program ... SEC Network will provide TV coverage for both sessions.
