A very satisfying victory. The score didn't reflect that the Gators won six straight sets over Auburn. It wasn't even close.

Gators complete volleyball sweep at Auburn

Special to Gatorsports.com

AUBURN, Ala. — Fourth-ranked Florida closed out the two-match volleyball series against the Tigers with another sweep, defeating Auburn in three sets Thursday night to move to 2-0.

Picking up right where they left off last night, the Gators took the first set 25-14. The second set was a closer battle between the two squads, but Florida pulled out the 25-19 victory to go up 2-0 in the match. The Gators clinched their second victory of the season after defeating the Tigers, 25-21 in the third set.

For back-to-back nights, T'ara Ceasar led the way offensively, recording 12 kills on the evening. Holly Carlton pitched in seven, while Paige Hammons posted six kills in the three-setter.

"T'ara (Ceasar) had another fine performance and it's the second night in a row where we had solid production off the bench – this time by Paige (Hammons)," UF coach Mary Wise said.

Darrielle King, Thayer Hall and Marlie Monserez combined for 13 kills on the evening as well.

Monserez also dished out 33 assists in the three-set match, averaging 11.00 per set.

UF held Auburn to a .076 hitting percentage, keeping the Tigers to below .100 for the second-straight night. Lauren Dooley and Carlton led the way defensively at the net, each recording four blocks.

Elli McKissock and Paula Cerame led the squad in digs, each registering 10 in the match. Ceasar added nine digs of her own, just one shy of a double-double.

The Gators return home to face off against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. First serve for Oct. 30's match is slated for 7 p.m. on the SEC Network, while Oct. 31's match is set for 3 p.m. on the SEC Network +.

The final tally on how many Florida players tested positive for COVID-19 last week is now in. The total is 25, according to data released by UF on Tuesday.

That brings the total positive tests to 31 for the month of October and 62 since the return to campus in late May.

Last week's outbreak caused the Gators to pause all football activities indefinitely last Tuesday and forced the postponement of last Saturday's LSU game and this Saturday's game against Missouri. Both of those games were to be played in The Swamp.

In addition to the 25 players last week, head coach Dan Mullen and two assistant coaches also tested positive.

The Missouri game is now scheduled for Oct. 31, while the LSU game has been rescheduled for Dec. 12.

UF women's basketball showcasing competitive nature as preseason camp commences

Graham Hall
Special to The Sun
Florida guard Lavender Briggs (3) is one of four returning starters for the Gators this season.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic era has led to countless issues pertaining to the development of athletes across every level, Florida Gators women's basketball coach Cameron Newbauer won't let the pandemic prevent the program from continuing to rise.

And based off early workouts, the Gators haven't lost their eagerness to improve on last season's 15-14 regular-season finish either.

"We've got people that are more hungry, we've got younger players now that are talented, so that naturally puts some — I don't want to say pressure, but you've got to bring your A-game every day, because people are competing for minutes," Newbauer said. "I think we'll play a little faster, I think we'll play a little differently as well."

The Gators are coming off their best season since the 2015-16 campaign and Newbauer's squad will look to maintain momentum in preseason camp prior to opening the season Nov. 25.

Florida will have 42 days to conduct no more than 30 practices — considering UF led the conference last season in games played by underclassmen, Newbauer expects the team to make leaps and bounds in that time, especially now that the Gators are fully entrenched in his system.

"It's been neat to see the competitive nature day-in and day-out, with the number of new kids," Newbauer said. "We also have a lot more players now that want to win, and I think it's taken us a lot of time to get here, and it's something that's been bred from our upperclassmen."

In the 2019-20 campaign, Newbauer's third season in Gainesville, the Gators registered multiple top-25 victories for the first time since he arrived by way of Belmont University, including a 70-62 win at No. 13 Kentucky and a 83-80 win over No. 22-ranked Arkansas.

Much of the scoring load was carried by the team's highly recruited freshman, Lavender Briggs, who's one of four returning starters for the Gators this season.

Briggs led the Gators in scoring with 15.0 points per game, which resulted in her being named to the All-SEC Freshman Team by season's end. Much to the chagrin of UF's opponents this season, Newbauer said Briggs has added to her game in the offseason.

"Her shot and her handles have gotten tighter and quicker. This is one of those people that really went out and put in a lot of time during COVID. Everybody says they did that, but not everybody you see it translate in workouts," Newbauer said. "She's scoring in different ways, and has really taken on the mindset of 'what are my weaknesses, and how do I get better in those areas', and she owned that. But I think the biggest thing I've seen is the competitive maturity. She understands 'if I want to be great, I need people to come at me in practice every day'."

Yet Briggs, a former five-star recruit, won't be expected to carry the scoring load on her own this season, as the Gators have added five new contributors this season, led by fellow five-star prospect Jordyn Merritt. Ranked the No. 27 overall recruit in the incoming class by ESPN, Merritt is UF's highest-ranked signee in seven years, and the 6-foot-3 forward is expected to make a noticeable impact from the jump this season — however, she's far from the only sizable underclassmen in the paint for the Gators. Sophomore forward Faith Dut is listed at 6-foot-4, as is freshman forward Floor Toonders, although Newbauer says they're among several players who appear to be taller than their listed height.

"Faith looks like she might have grown a little bit, so we've definitely got size," Newbauer said. "They've all got the ability to spread the floor and shoot threes. Floor Toonders is somebody that has a chance to be special because of her skillset and ability."

But it's not just a youth movement in Florida's basketball complex. Redshirt senior Kiara 'Kiki' Smith enters her final season in Gainesville as a returning starter after averaging 11.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game last season, and Newbauer expects the 5-foot-10 distributor to once again be an all-around contributor. For Florida to take the next step, they'll need an all-around effort from the entire roster as well.

"She's one of those players that can be a facilitator, can be a scorer, and she's really morphed herself to be what we need in the moment. Far surpassed anything we thought she was going to be when we recruited her," Newbauer said of Smith, who joined the program after two seasons at ASA College (NY). "Her coaches told us how tough she was, we knew she was going to be a competitor, but the level that she competes at, with her energy, and now taking on a greater, different leadership role, where now she's not afraid to get after some people, it's been neat to see. But she also has that switch where she can put her arm around you, joke with you and really nurture you."

UF roundup: Gators drop soccer match at No. 11 Texas A&M

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas — No. 11 Texas A&M scored two first-half goals Sunday and held off No. 15 Florida for a 2-1 SEC soccer win  at Ellis Field.

It was a traditional meeting between the two programs. Sunday's result was the 13th one-goal decision in the 17-match all-time series between the two teams. UF dropped to 1-1-1 and A&M improved to 2-1.

The opening goal came in the 22nd minute when Texas A&M's Barbara Olivieri's corner kick curled in to kick in off the far post.

A foul was called on Florida's Parker Roberts when she bumped TAMU's Lauren Geczik inside the top corner of the box. Jimena Lopez scored on the resulting penalty kick in the 28th minute.

The first goal of second half was also the first Gator goal for sophomore Syd Kennedy. Madison Alexander tried to play the ball into the box but it deflected off the legs of TAMU defenders. Alexander picked up the deflection, sliding to poke the ball to Kenned located at the top of the box. With her natural left foot, Kennedy scored on a 17-yard shot to the far post in the 58th minute.

"I thought in the first half Texas A&M did a really good job of playing physically against us and we really didn't respond that well," UF coach Becky Burleigh said. "In the second half, we stepped it up. The second half was a different game for us. But probably too little too late.

"It's a really good lesson for us when playing on the road - or anywhere, to be fair - we need to start out a little grittier right from the beginning and not try to work our way into the game."

Florida returns home to play host to Vanderbilt for Kicking for the Cure — UF's annual cancer awareness match at 6 p.m. Sunday. Vanderbilt lost 2-1 in double overtime at South Carolina on Sunday.

Notes:  Gator sophomore Kouri Peace left the match early in the second half with an ankle injury. She'll be examined by UF team doctors when the Gators return to Gainesville.

• Florida goalkeeper Susi Espinoza turned in a season-high six saves Sunday

• This is the 10th time both teams brought a national ranking into a meeting.

• Texas A&M was Florida's third consecutive ranked opponent to open 2020 action. The Gators opened 2020 with a tie versus No. 8 Georgia (1-1 2OT) and then won versus then No. 15 Alabama (2-1)

VOLLEYBALL

Florida received the No. 2 ranking in the SEC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league announced last week.

Florida, which finished last season's campaign with a 27-5 record and won a share of the 2019 SEC Championship, garnered two first-place votes and totaled 132 points, just 11 points behind Kentucky for first place.

The Gators also boasted one Preseason All-SEC selection in junior outside hitter Thayer Hall. The Spartanburg, S.C. native is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American and earned a spot on the All-SEC team in 2019. Hall finished her sophomore campaign with 13 double-doubles, the fourth-best mark in the SEC.

UF returns 12 players from last season's NCAA Regional Semifinal team, including five starters: Holly Carlton, Lauren Dooley, Thayer Hall, Paige Hammons and Lauren Dooley.

The Gators welcome four freshmen to the 2020 squad and transfer T'ara Ceasar will see her first action on the court this fall after sitting out the 2019 season due to SEC Transfer rules.

The fall portion of the 2020 campaign will serve up on Friday and will consist of eight matches against four opponents. Those eight matches will be played in a double-header format, consisting of two home weekends and two away weekends.

The Gators are slated to make their debut at Auburn on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. Florida's home opener is the following week, when Alabama comes to town on Oct. 30 for a 7 p.m. matchup.

Details on fan capacity with the released at a later date.

What is the No. 3 Florida Gators vs. No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies betting line, over-under?

The Florida Gators, currently ranked in a tie for No. 3 in the most recent Amway Coaches Poll, hope to stay undefeated as they take on the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies at noon Saturday at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas.

The Gators are currently 2-0 in their Southeastern Conference-only season, coming off a 38-24 win over South Carolina. Quarterback Kyle Trask threw for four touchdowns, but Florida had to hold off a late Gamecocks rally to remain unbeaten.

Meanwhile, the Aggies are 1-1 and hoping to bounce back following a 52-24 loss to No. 2 Alabama. Quarterback Kellen Mond threw three touchdowns, two to Ainias Smith.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the SEC opted to have a 10-game conference only season, including six games against division opponents and four against non-division opponents. The conference also has COVID-19 testing protocols in place

Florida Gators vs. Texas A&M Aggies betting line

As of Thursday afternoon, the Florida Gators are favored by 6 1/2 points over the Texas A&M Aggies, according to BetMGM.

The over-under is 56.5 points.

The money line for the game is -239 for the Florida Gators and +190 for the Texas A&M Aggies.

[gatortalk] Pick 'em results

Tough week for most of us on Pick 'em. Somehow Alan Russell went 10-2 to take top honors. Second place goes to Clint Carver, Jim Mesojedec, Patrick Petty, and Shawn Kopelakis, at 8-4.

For the year, Jeff Herman, Jeff Legg, Shawn Koeplakis and Wayne Gaff are 16-8. Alan Russell and Justin Sharpless are 15-9.

We'll play again this week as the Gators head on out to Texas and tangle with the Aggies.
