[gatortalk] Pick 'em results

Congratulations to Jackson Harrell, who came within one game of a perfect 12-0 last Saturday, taking first place.  

Allen Lamb, Becky Maher, Bob Seymour, John Dickinson, and Larry Green were all 10-2, coming in second.

For the year, yep, that's me again at 59-37, a scant one-game lead over Harry Chiles.  Deborah Tauscher, Steve Lindauer, and

Tom Wilde are third at 57-39.  Staying at 60% over the long haul is very hard to do.  In fact, it's nearly impossible.

NO PICK 'EM THIS WEEK as the Gators get a week off to catch their breath and get ready to bring some Dawgs to heel.

This is very exciting! As you probably know, Florida is the only school whose basketball and football teams are ranked in the top 10 of both polls.

I hope this is a great year for our basketball program. Mike White is a really good guy.

Year before last, I ran into him walking between the hotel and Vandy's Memorial Gym before we played here. He actually stopped and talked to me for a minute. (I'm sure he recognized my basketball watching prowess)

Gators to open season No. 6 in Associated Press basketball poll

The Florida men's basketball team is ranked No. 6 in The Associated Press preseason poll released Monday.

It matches the Gators' second-highest preseason ranking in program history, behind only UF's 2006-07 campaign debuting at No. 1. Florida also opened at No. 6 in the 2001-02 season. It marks Florida's 13th time opening the season in the AP's top 10, including the second under coach Mike White. Previously under White's watch, the Gators opened at No. 8 in the 2017-18 season and climbed as high as No. 5 later that season.

Florida's roster boasts a host of young talent, as all three returning starters from last season's squad are sophomores, pairing with a six-man freshman class highlighted by McDonald's All-Americans Scottie Lewis and Tre Mann. The veteran presence comes from graduate transfer Kerry Blackshear, the team's lone senior, along with junior Dontay Bassett in the post.

Florida hosts an exhibition game vs. Lynn University on Oct. 29 before tipping the regular season on Nov. 5 vs. North Florida.

The top 25 teams in The Associated Press' preseason 2019-20 men's college basketball poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, final 2018-19 records, total points based on 25 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 25th-place vote and last year's final ranking:

I mean.. we have a pretty good engineering school..  why not make a new robot gator?  The only issue is we couldnt keep it on the field the whole time because there isnt much space out there.

I recall a giant fake gator on our sidelines circa 80s.

I believe that it was made for the 1980 horror film "Alligator."

Does anyone have photos or know of a link an article bout it?

I've tried to tell my nephews about it, but they should like proof.

Yep,  remember that.  It's was from the movie and had animatronic effects that opened the jaws.

It was a very tough weekend for Pick 'em.  Somehow Alan Russell went 8-4 to take first place.  Second place featured Dustin Davis, Jim Schenone, Karlie Kelley, Keith Jackson, Kevin Fraze, Peter Sones, Rob Davis, Shawn Lewis, and Steve Lindauer, all at 7-5.

 

Overall, Harry Chiles leads at 51-33, followed by John Bowers at 50-34, and Alan Russell and Steve Lindauer at 49-35.

 

We'll play yet again this week as the Gators hit the road again to Columbia, S.C.
