[gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: SEC football analysts have Florida trending up

A longer leash for Muschamp? We had never lost to Georgia Southern. We had not lost at home to Vanderbilt since 1945. That was with most players gone to fight in the war.
Just how long should his leash have been ?

SEC football analysts have Florida trending up

Year in and year out, the coaching carousel seems to pick up speed, and the Southeastern Conference in 2018 is emblematic of said trend.

Florida coach Dan Mullen is one of five SEC coaches entering their first year at a new program, and the rate of turnover shows no sign of slowing down.

There are those who believe the transition to a new head coach can spark a player's growth and development, while many on the other side of the fence are convinced consistency among coaches and coordinators is necessary for a program's sustained development.

Greg McElroy, a former University of Alabama quarterback and now SEC Network analyst, tends to side with the latter.

"I don't think it's huge. The coaching roster in the league today is better than it was a year ago. I don't think anyone can deny that. That's a really good thing for the league," McElroy told The Sun. "I don't think it hurts development. As someone who experienced a coaching change, everything happens for a reason."

McElroy said the turnover can often unleash a player's potential, because the incoming coach strives to leave a strong impression in the first year at a program.

"If anything it helps development, because you're trying to prove yourself to the new guy. 'You didn't recruit me, but I'm going to get you to like me,' right? I'm optimistic and hopeful that's what happens in the league," McElroy said. "When we look three or four years down the road and we can say 'Man, those five hires that happened before the 2018 season, those were five great hires,' and the stability and the competition in the league has never been better. I really hope that's the case when we look at this in 2021, 2022."

While he can't speak for each program's hire, CBS Sports' Barrett Sallee believes Mullen will do what two previous Nick Saban assistants couldn't in Gainesville: have a sustained period of success at Florida.

"He's been in the SEC. That's it. Will Muschamp and Dan Mullen now kind of have the same idea of what they want to do. Dan's just been in the SEC; he's not a first-time head coach, he's not a young head coach. He just gets it now after what he did at Mississippi State," Sallee said. "I think that brings a little more stability, I think it speeds up the time frame a little bit too because Florida knows 'Hey, you've done this before, now do it again.' But I think that's all it is: I think it's just Mullen understanding what he wants to do, how football is played these days, where it's going. And really I think that's the only difference between those two."

Sallee said Muschamp has grown into one of the top coaches in the conference after struggling with adapting to the ongoing evolution of the game while at Florida. While the jury is still out on whether Jim McElwain can resurrect his head coaching career, Sallee believes Muschamp has learned from an up-and-down stint at UF.

"I think Muschamp, when he got that job, didn't recognize what football was going to be. Maybe to a fault, he was a little stubborn. He said 'Look, I'm going to do it my way' and refused to have the foresight to figure out exactly what was coming," Sallee said. "Just in general his philosophy, it really hamstrung him in terms of building that program to where Florida wanted to be. Will Muschamp was the hottest name in college football at that time, the hottest. And because of the decision he made, that star fizzled out and he couldn't recover. He made the right decisions at Florida in year four, but he just didn't have the personnel to run them. I think that's the problem with him, he just made one bad decision when he got that job from a philosophical standpoint and it haunted him throughout the course of his career, and for Florida, you don't have that much time."

Muschamp was close enough to turning things around, Sallee says, that he believes the current South Carolina head coach would have soon turned UF back into a perennial power if awarded a longer leash.

"I think he would have won the SEC East had he stayed at Florida if he had been given the right amount of time, but it's Florida," Sallee said. "The pressure is there, it's there for a good reason, so he didn't get the job done."

[gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: Former Gators freshman Watkins pleads not guilty to 4 charges

Well, that didn't take long.
So, now we don't have to read about him the whole season and wonder if he'll ever make it back. Or, if we want him back.

Former Gators freshman Watkins pleads not guilty to 4 charges

Justin Watkins. [PAUL RYAN /CORRESPONDENT]

Florida freshman Justin Watkins, who announced his intention to leave the program Friday, entered a written plea of not guilty for two misdemeanor battery charges and two third degree felonies involving a female victim, according to Alachua County Court Records. As a result, the case will likely head to trial.

Watkins, 19, signed with the Gators on National Signing Day in February, but found himself arrested for trespassing in May after a domestic dispute with a female victim.

Watkins was arrested once again Tuesday after a female victim, with whom he had a relationship, went to the University of Florida police department alleging Watkins choked, beat and assaulted her by throwing a hair brush and can of hair grease. He is facing four charges that include false imprisonment/kidnapping and domestic battery by strangulation. Both are third-degree felonies.

UF coach Dan Mullen suspended Watkins indefinitely from all team activities pending the outcome of the investigation.

He was released from the Alachua County jail Wednesday night on $40,000 bond.

Watkins, a former four-star prospect out of East Ridge High in Clermont, enrolled at Florida in June for the Summer B semester and was expected to contribute as a cornerback and on special teams.

Former Gator walk-on Fricke finds new competitive outlet

Former UF basketball walk-on Hudson Fricke takes part in a regional CrossFit competition. [Submitted photo]

Hudson Fricke spent three seasons a walk-on for the Florida men's basketball program, playing sparingly from 2007-10 while pushing teammates in practices.

Fast-forward eight years and Fricke has found a different competitive outlet, a lifestyle and a business opportunity in the sport of CrossFit.

Fricke, 29, came upon the sport somewhat by accident. The 6-foot-1 guard finished his college career at Milligan College in Elizabethtown, Tenn., helping lead the NAIA school to a conference title while earning conference player of the year honors. Fricke then returned to his native Greenville, S.C., but didn't give up on his dreams of playing pro basketball. He even explored trying to obtain dual American-German citizenship to have a better chance to land a spot on a German team.

"I was working with friends here in town, flipping houses, playing basketball as much as I could, and kind of stumbled upon this thing called CrossFit during that time as well," Fricke said.

Fricke found himself drawn to the workout regimen that incorporates elements of high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics and calisthenics. He became a certified CrossFit instructor and six years ago started an affiliated gym, Southern Moon CrossFit, with a high school friend, Dave Schlarb Jr. In six years, the gym has grown, with five coaches, including Fricke, overseeing 90 clients.

"We kind of want to stay pretty intimate and that keeps our product to a much higher quality of product," Fricke said.

As a standout athlete, Fricke became attracted to the competitive side of CrossFit as well. He began taking part in CrossFit competitions and twice, was ranked as the number one CrossFit athlete in South Carolina. Four times, Fricke has qualified for CrossFit regionals, but has come up just short in taking part in the annual national CrossFit games, which takes place the first week of August. The top five from regional competitions qualify nationally. The highest Fricke has finished at regionals was seventh in 2015.

Fricke said he enjoys the competitions, but views CrossFit as more than local or national rankings.

"It's the greatest transition program, the greatest community builder," Fricke said. "It's done wonders for so many people, including myself personally, my family."

Fricke said he's taken the lessons learned from his three years at Florida under renowned former Gator basketball coach Billy Donovan into his adult life. During the 2008-09 season, Fricke broke both wrists in a freak weightlifting accident when an exercise ball popped while he was lifting weights on it. Initially, Fricke said it caused him to reflect on where his basketball career was going and how to accept his role on the team.

"Any time you have adversity there is always a way to respond, there are two ways to respond to it, it can be in a positive way for yourself or the moving forward progression, or there can be a negative response it," Fricke said. "At the time I was definitely in a tight spot, emotionally and physically."

Fricke said he chose to take a positive response, "The change for me was, hey let's change my attitude about this, let's change how I'm looking at this," he said.

Fricke said he still plays pickup basketball a few times a week in Greenville. He still follows Gator basketball as often as he can and texts Donovan on occasion.

"He's probably the greatest mentor in my life and the things that I learned from him have been implemented in everything I do in a positive way," Fricke said.

Fricke said he still has a window of about two to three years to try to qualify for the CrossFit nationals. Whether that happens or not, Fricke said he's found a lifetime sport.

"It kind of filled that void for me of training," Fricke said. "I was always big on training and getting into the gym and getting shots up and now instead of getting shots up it was rowing or lifting weights or running or doing something else, just some type of physical training for myself personally.

"The business side of it, I really enjoy trying to passionately pursue people that I could better and really help their lifestyle and help their lives and coach them through whatever they are at in their lives and use CrossFit as the means to make an impact in others."

RE: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Daily Football Fix: Would Harvin make a good coach?

His numbers later in the season are what make him memorable. He averaged 10.4 yards per carry his freshman season.

He just didn't have a lot of carries.

The SECCG and Ohio State were enough to make him SEC Freshman of the Year.

Our offense had OSU so flustered they couldn't stop anything. Percy was certainly a part of that.

I won't disagree that the Gators were far better with both, although Harvin was soooooo much of the offense in 2006; not as much Tebow.  And once Harvin was gone, that game-changer with the ball (I mean, 9.2 yds per touch!) went away.

There are no statues honoring him outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium yet, but an argument can be made for Percy Harvin as the greatest football player in Florida history.

Harvin was the offensive catalyst for two of UF's three national title teams. In 2006, Florida does not get to the national title game without Harvin's combined 167 yards of rushing and receiving and two TDs in UF's 38-28 SEC championship win over Arkansas. In 2008, the Gators don't win the BCS title over Oklahoma without Harvin's 171 yards of offfense and one TD.

Harvin's greatness at Florida was at times overshadowed by off-field issues and bouts with migraine headaches that occasionally sidelined him. Back living in Gainesville, Harvin discussed his issues with migraines and social anxiety disorder at length with Sports Illustrated reporter Michael McKnight. Florida head coach Dan Mullen, who recruited Harvin to UF as offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer, has invited the 30-year-old Harvin to UF's football facilities to mentor current players. According to the SI article, Harvin also is back enrolled in classes in Florida to finish his degree in psychology.

"He's young enough that our players have seen him play; they've seen his success in the NFL," Mullen told SI. "Hey, here's the standard, I've done it and it helped me be successful."

Could Harvin's second act at Florida wind up being coaching? Harvin told SI that he's found new mechanisms to deal with his impulsive behavior. He disputed a Sporting News report in 2012 that he choked UF receivers Billy Gonzales coach to the ground in a practice during his playing days.

"First of all, he's a grown man," Harvin told SI. "Like he's gonna let a kid choke him with no consequences. It wasn't anything close to choking. Did we have disagreements? Of course. We had a lot of egos on that team, a lot of guys who wanted touches."

Gonzales has referred to the report as "overblown" as well.

There is more to coaching than being a mentor, and Harvin would need to prove his worth as a teacher and as a recruiter. But it certainly wouldn't hurt to have a former icon like Harvin on staff, provided he remains on his current positive path.
