[gatortalk] some insight into WVU's style of play

So, give WVU coach Bob Huggins credit. When the NCAA changed the rules a few years ago and took away hand-checking on the perimeter, it threw a wrench into Huggins' style of coaching.

His success was built on tough, hard-nosed, in-your-grill defense. But, suddenly, it was against the rules. Huggins struggled to adjust and it showed in WVU's records.

What's a coach who always recruited defenders instead of shooters to do?

That's when the light bulb came on.

If Huggins extended his defense to full-court and trapped everything, even including missed shots, he could return to his physical, defensive-oriented style.

Thirty-four games later, WVU's in the Sweet 16.

That's because no matter how many fouls are called on WVU, the Mountaineers still are getting away with fouling about 50 percent of the time.

The premise is simple.

If a team fouls relentlessly enough, there's no way officials can catch or call every foul.

That's the diabolical genius of Huggins.

And there's nothing dirty about it.

RE: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: Another highly ranked foe for No. 1 Gators

This is cool!  I'm happy Jenny Rowland has been able to continue the success of Rhonda Faehn.

I guess it wasn't that difficult with Bridget Sloan, et al.

They musta heard you, Oliver - they totally kicked Bama butt on Friday.  Alabama had their highest score all year...so UF just decided to go ahead and post theirs (the biggest score in the nation this year, so far).  THREE perfect 10s!  And probably should have been 4 - one of the judges gave Sloan a 10 on her floor routine (the other a 9.95).

The team was at the women's basketball game for a little bit on Sunday, in the stands - probably stopped in after AM practice.

So far, so good for first-year Florida gymnastics coach Jenny Rowland and her top-ranked Gators.

Facts

Friday
Who:
 No. 5 Alabama (2-2, 1-1 SEC) vs. No. 1 Florida (3-0, 1-0)
When: 6:45 p.m.
Where: O'Connell Center; gates open at 5:30 p.m.
TV: SEC Network (Gainesville/Ocala Cox cable 1068)
Online: SEC Network +
Tickets: $5 for adults; children 17 & under and UF students with Gator1 card admitted free.

UF improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Southeastern Conference action with last Friday's 197.075-195.90 win at No. 8 Auburn.

Next up for the Gators is No. 5 Alabama (2-2, 2-1) at 6:45 p.m. today in the O'Connell Center in their home SEC opener.

"The girls came back learning a lot," Rowland said. "It was our first head-to-head SEC competition away, so I think it was really important. The freshmen came back after hopefully getting some jitters out of their system and learning from it."

The Gators swept the meet's events against the Tigers (2-2, 0-2), with sophomore All-American Kennedy Baker leading the way with a 9.95, the high score for any event, to take the floor exercise title for the third time this season.

Senior All-American Bridget Sloan won her third straight all-around title (10th overall) with a score of 39.575 and added her third straight uneven bars title with a 9.925 mark en route to winning the SEC Gymnast of the Week honor for the third consecutive time.

Sloan has now won 75 event titles at UF to rank fifth in the program's 44-year history.

She now takes aim at the current No. 4, Kristen Guise, who has 78.

"I can't say enough about Bridget Sloan," Rowland noted. "She comes into practice day and after day and grinds through. In competition, she thrives."

Sophomore All-American Alex McMurtry won her third vault title (10th of her career) and added her first career win on the balance beam, with winning marks of 9.90 in each event, to claim SEC Specialist of the Week honors. while Baker's 39.475 was good enough for second place in the all-around and freshman Alicia Boren shared third with Auburn's Caitlin Atkinson, each with a 39.275.

"I'm really excited to be back home," Baker said. "Alabama is a really good SEC team, and I think it's going to be a really good SEC meet between both teams."

This evening also is the start of "UFill the Dome" weekend, with the Florida men's basketball team hosting No. 9 West Virginia at noon Saturday and the women's basketball team squaring off against No. 12 Kentucky at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"Alabama coming in on Friday, it's going to be a great meet," Rowland said. "I know they always are prepared, and they're going to come in and bring their A-team. They're going to be ready for battle, as will the Gators."

Tonight's meet will air live on the SEC Network.

RE: [gatortalk] did anyone else notice...

I'm surprised the Big 12 conference would allow this kind of behavior.

This is more like Miami and the semis, honored members of the ACC.

What I saw was the Gators lined up (straight across the court, at about the top of the key) to prepare for the National Anthem.  WVU decided to circle nearby and do that sort of swaying/leaning thing, arms entwined in the huddle.  One or more WVU players kept shoving Doe Doe (and maybe one other Gator) who were minding their own business, facing away from the circle. That's what got tempers flared.  There was no reason WVU had to do that so close to the Gators; they certainly could have moved toward the center of the court - or even better, did it on their own side of the court.

No, I agree completely with you, and to add insult to injury was Leon's concussion at Vandy didn't get a foul call either. I doubt the refs would have been so generous when our players throw elbows.

…that it appears part of WV's defensive philosophy is elbows to the nose and forearm shivers. I think there should have been 2 ejections, but the refs just let 'em play dirty. I was not pleased and am surprised it's not getting more attention.

[gatortalk] Bench play

Just a quick note.  I was really surprised and pleased at the bench play we got on Saturday.  If they continue like that, we could have a shot at redeeming this season and making a decent run by the end of the season.  It was like they suddenly decided to grow up and play like we thought they could when we recruited them.  With more mature play by JE at center and keeping him out of foul trouble, a little more consistency by Hill, and some serious improvement by Robinson, we could have a team that could make a decent run in the tournament.

There was a little spat before the game started, too. It was mentioned on Sportcenter. WVU players dancing on our logo?  Did anyone see it?

No, I agree completely with you, and to add insult to injury was Leon's concussion at Vandy didn't get a foul call either. I doubt the refs would have been so generous when our players throw elbows.

…that it appears part of WV's defensive philosophy is elbows to the nose and forearm shivers. I think there should have been 2 ejections, but the refs just let 'em play dirty. I was not pleased and am surprised it's not getting more attention.

Re: [gatortalk] did anyone else notice...

From what I saw, it seemed like the confrontation was closer to the basket rather than in the middle. However, it honestly didn't seem like it was a big deal. More like guys jawing at each other than fisticuffs. Of course you know that you see more on TV than when you are at the game .

What it looked like on TV was the WV team was in a huddle and then started moving over the center line and Doe Doe didn't like that.  It seem sped to be a pretty bush league move, but not sure what else to expect from a Bob Huggins coached team.

In any case, it sure fired up our team, I think WV thought they would be able to come in and intimidate us with their antics, didn't work.  Scoreboard!
