Re: [gatortalk] Toomer's Oaks are Coming Down

No sorrow here!  I now call it Dead Tree, Alabama.

A few years ago, Paula and I were attending the UF/Auburn football game with a couple of friends we were RVing with and parked right across from the trees about 3 spaces from Toomer's Drug Store on the corner.  Great place to park for pre-game events prior with easy access to downtown restaurants, bars, Toomer's, etc.

However, after Auburn had beat our butts and we walked back to the car, we were surrounded by about 2,000 drunks also loaded with toilet paper.  We needed a police officer to protect us for the 45 minutes it took these fools to run out of toilet paper and stop harrassing us.  We needed a police escort to leave.

Glad their dead.  The world's a better place.

You have to feel a little bit of sorrow for Auburn Fans.

After their Spring Game this year, they will roll the Toomer's Oaks one final time.

If you recall, a crazy nut Alabama Fan, Harvey Updyke, poisoned the trees a couple of years ago, after Auburn beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa…

Despite all efforts, the trees have not survived.

RE: [gatortalk] Toomer's Oaks are Coming Down

A shameful and tragic episode all the way around.

I imagine there will be few dry eyes around those trees that day.  Just a despicable and cowardly act by an idiot.

RE: [gatortalk] Toomer's Oaks are Coming Down

As someone who is often accused of being a tree-hugger, it is sad they didn’t make it but they survived longer than my horticulturist husband thought they would. One of my high school classmates lost her battle to breast cancer today, and I think like her, they and the AU arborists fought a good fight. Now they need to dig that soil out and replant. It will take decades to replace them, but a good experience for the Aubies watching them grow!

RE: [gatortalk] Toomer's Oaks are Coming Down

I remember sitting between 2 groups of Alabama and Auburn fans at the SEC championship game one year.

UF was getting the beating from Alabama.

The Auburn fans and Bammy fans started off the game friendly enough, but after awhile they got more and more contentious with each other.

By the end of the game they were hurling insults at one another.

They’re both a bunch of red neck idiots.

I’m sure there are plenty of red neck Gator fans.  I know we have our share.

But, it’s much easier to find the low lifes when you’re looking for Auburn and Alabama fans.

This is oak killing is just one more sad chapter of the story of idiots.

Florida-Ole Miss storylines

Published: Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 8:00 a.m.

3 THINGS TO WATCH

Battle on the boards

Ole Miss is a physical team up front, led by senior forward Murphy Holloway, the SEC's leading rebounder at 10.3 per game. Florida will need to box out the 240-pound Holloway and 235-pound Reginald Buckner throughout the game. Limiting teams to one shot has fueled UF's fast-break offense this season. Patric Young will do most of the banging inside for the Gators. Will Yeguete will help off the bench and the return of injured forward Casey Prather also should help on the boards.

Taking care of the ball

Ole Miss forces 16.7 turnovers per game and 8.9 steals per game. Kenny Boynton, Mike Rosario and Scottie Wilbekin are going to need to be strong with the ball throughout the game and avoid turnovers.

Free-throw shooting

Neither Florida (.697) nor Ole Miss (.673) shoot well from the free-throw line. But in a physical game in which fouls are bound to be called around the basket, free-throw shooting could make the difference. The Gators are coming off a 7-for-16 night from the foul line. Florida coach Billy Donovan said Patric Young and Will Yeguete are putting extra work in following practice to get their free-throw woes figured out. Young went 2-of-7 from the line against South Carolina and is shooting just 50 percent (37-of-74) from the free-throw line this season.

KEY MATCHUP

Florida guard Scottie Wilbekin vs. Ole Miss guard Marshall Henderson: Henderson, the SEC's leading scorer at 19.3 points per game, is slippery around screens and has a quick release on his shot. He'll be another tough guard for Wilbekin, who has managed to shut down top scorers throughout the season. Expect Wilbekin to get plenty of help from his teammates, including Kenny Boynton and even Patric Young on screen-and-roll situations.
