Ok, it's time for a brief review of our trip to Birmingham:
Shane, you're welcome to add to this story. I'm only stating the facts as I would like to remember them.
We started out at 6:15ish after I watched Shane pass by my house two or three times from the back yard.
Saw our first Gator car on I65 before we even crossed through Nashville.
Arrived at the stadium about an hour before the game. Our tickets were on the ECU side, so we missed McElwain stalking the parking lot.
The parking lot was a muddy pit. Yes, the neighborhood around Legion Field is still a slum, just like I remembered it the last time I was there for the second SEC Championship game.
The stadium, the "Gray Lady" is a rusted out hulk. I can't believe it isn't condemned. You can still see the steel beams from the former upper deck that had to be removed before it fell in on somebody. If I lived in Birmingham, I'd be ashamed of the place.
It rained off and on throughout the game, not much of a problem though.
Although we were sitting on the Pirates side, we were right in the middle of a bunch of Gator fans. They were all a friendly, jovial group. The stadium was about 75% filled with Gators.
Considering the weather, 30,000 plus wasn't a bad crowd.
I was nervous for the start of the game and, stayed that way until we got up 21-7. Of course, it got a little dicey again as the second half wore on.
That made for a good game, though. Lots of fun, no one wanted to leave early.
A few jeers when Driskel came in. I'm glad he didn't throw an interception or fumble. The first down with about 1:00 to go helped everyone's demeanor.
After the game, we hit the road right away because what looked like the storm of the century was bearing down on I65. Got home at about 6:45, watched the replay on the SEC network.
Overall, a great experience. It's much more fun driving home with a win…
