Which SEC teams get the most love from CBS?

Derek Morrow

The SEC has a lucrative agreement with CBS that gives the conference a guaranteed national broadcast throughout most of the college football season. This graphic looks at which teams have received the most exposure from the deal over the past decade.

Saturday's classic Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn drew a huge rating for CBS, as expected.

That was particularly true in Birmingham, where the game registered a whopping 82 share in the metro area, meaning 82 percent of TVs in use were tuned to the game.

It's clear that the SEC's longtime deal with CBS has been a winner for the league (which gets about $55 million per year from the deal) and the network (which has scored huge ratings).

But the deal – which ensures a national broadcast window for the league each week – also generates plenty of exposure for league's universities.

Of course, some schools are getting more exposure than others from the agreement, which gives CBS first choice of SEC games in a given week. We looked at the past 10 years to see which schools CBS has chosen the most and the least for its coveted SEC package.

As it turns out, Alabama, Florida and LSU are nearly tied at the top. In fact, after Friday's Arkansas-LSU game appeared on CBS, the Crimson Tide, Gators and Tigers had all appeared on CBS 46 times over the past 10 years. On Saturday, Alabama took the lead at 47 appearances – as you can see in our infographic.

About 46 percent of CBS games dating back to 2004 involved Alabama, Florida or LSU.

Georgia (33 appearances), Tennessee (30) and Auburn (26) were the next most popular teams.

As for the most popular games to appear on the network, Florida-Georgia has appeared on CBS in each of the past 10 years. The Iron Bowl was tapped for CBS nine times (2007 being the exception), which was tied with Arkansas-LSU (often played on the Friday after Thanksgiving) and Florida-Tennessee. In case you were wondering, Alabama-LSU has been chosen as a CBS game eight times since 2004.

Here are a couple other interesting notes from our research:

• Saturday's SEC Championship Game will be the first time this season Missouri has appeared on the network. But, in just their second season in the league, the Tigers will have played in three CBS games. That's as many as Mississippi State over the past decade and more than Vanderbilt (once).

• Texas A&M already has five appearances on CBS in just its second year in the league.

• Florida State, thanks to its yearly matchup with Florida, is the most likely non-SEC team you'll find playing in an SEC on CBS matchup.

• Since Nick Saban took over the Tide, Alabama has appeared on CBS 32 times. However, Alabama's record for most times being tapped for CBS games actually occurred during the Mike Shula regime (seven times in 2005). The highest total for Auburn was five times during the 2010 season.
