RE: [gatortalk] Zook 2

I think any meaningful comparison between Zook and Muschamp at this point in their careers at UF is crazy…Remember all the off field shenanigans with Zook, the fight at the Frat House, etc….IMO, Muschamp inherited a undisciplined mess from Urban Meyer and has done a pretty good job so far in cleaning it up and establishing a firm foundation. We did beat 4 top 10 teams last year, 2 on the road with a solid defense, good kicking game, and a conservative offense that did not turn it over……Now, Muschamp may flame out and get fired in a year or so, but right now, he’s done a solid job, not great, but certainly a very good job…

Yes the loss Saturday was painful and we can all question the play calling but let’s look back at 2 plays in particular…..Driskel missed a wide open Quentin Dunbar in the end zone the play before throwing his first interception and Vernon Hargreaves stepped out of bounds by 2-3 inches and would have scored otherwise…those 2 plays and we win going away.

Let’s also look at the offensive line. Over the summer the projected OL was Humphries, Garcia, Harrison, Halapio, and Moore….

Then at the beginning of fall practice we hear that Halapio is going to be out a few weeks and the project OL then was Humprhies, Garcia, Harrison, Moore, and Green.

Then the week before the 1st game Green was injured and gone for the year, the OL then changed to Humphries, Garcia, Harrison, Koehne, and Moore…

Humpries got injured early in the game Saturday and the OL changed once again during the game, basically we were without 3 key players, Humphries, Halapio and Green.

The key Saturday was TURNOVERS, last year we had 11 turnovers all season and 6 were in one game….we cut down on turnovers and get a few more as the season goes along and we win against anyone..

Let’s also remember that Miami has some really good players, a QB that will get drafted in the NFL, a stud RB, etc….they aren’t the Canes of old but have some really talented offensive players and our Defense after the 1st quarter absolutely dominated…as good or better than last year’s defense.

Let’s at our 2 competitors in the SEC East, UGA and SC, both are 1-1 and have defenses that have been scorched….Spurrier has 2 assistants in a fight on the sidelines and have to be separated by players…..the screams team in disarray….UGA has given up over 60 in the first 2 games, plus their OL has looked anything but solid…

I said to my dog (only one here to watch with me) Somebody tell the Gators there is not a rule in football that you MUST use 3 plays to make the required 10yds for a FD.

I was surprised we only hit the perimeter a few times with the running game—if I’m remember. Why not try to stretch them out?

I miss those fast starts under SOS too, Jay.

Charlie, I agree about these drives that seem to be chock full of converted 3rd downs.  Once you get into the red zone, that philosophy becomes a big problem because the field is shortened and it's much easier to defend the "three yards and a cloud of dust" or a dink-and-dunk passing game.  As we all saw Saturday.

I just don't know what to think.  I never liked Zook, and Meyer always made me uneasy somehow, even when we were winning.  I like Muschamp - a lot - and really want him to succeed. I just don't know that he'll have a chance if this season turns out poorly.  It really doesn't help our understanding of what's going on now that they don't let the media into practices any more.  Are we really just going to be that predictable and boring all year?  Is it because of a coaching philosophy, a talent issue, or both?  Are they running more a more aggressive offense in practice, or not?  Do they actually have a package for Trey Burton in the Wildcat where he might actually throw the ball?

I am also concerned about the way they use Matt Jones (though it is early, and one can argue he may not be 100% yet)  - the few times I saw him play for Armwood, he was far more successful as a RB catching passes than being a straight downhill runner.

There was one drive in particular where we had either 3 or 4 third and two situations and made them all by a 1/2 yard or so. Yes that's good but after all that we didn't get a score.

The one thing I loved about Spurrier was that we were often up 14 or 21 to nothing in the 1st quarter. I like those fast starts.

Zook's teams, if I recall, not only were painful on offense but didn't adjust on defense.  Muschamp's teams adjust on D.  He needs to stop being so hardheaded about playing this boring, ball-control offense.  I get it - it speeds up the game and gives the D plenty of time to rest and stay aggressive; however, as may have said, it's death for the Gators if they either play from behind or the D starts to get winded.  I'm not asking for Fun and Gun again, but there are times when you need to "stick in the knife" like SOS would and kill the opposing team with two or three successful pass plays in a row, or one deadly strike downfield.
