Actually, he is from West Palm Beach, Dwyer HS.  I usually refer to the entire area as S. Fla.  Years ago, Howard Schnellenberger took a map of Florida and marked off S. One thing about the South Florida papers. They're consistent. They've got Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback, a choice I would not disagree with. But, some coincidence he's from Miami, huh?

Senior Mike Gillislee nails down starting running back job at Florida

By Jason Lieser Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

GAINESVILLE — Gators senior Mike Gillislee waited three years for his turn at running back, and solidified himself as the starter this month. He held off a field of quality challengers to earn the top spot and should get the majority of the carries this season.

Freshman Matt Jones was the No. 11 running back prospect in the country when he came to Florida and sophomore Mack Brown has been rising, but neither was able to overtake Gillislee.

"That was pretty evident as we worked through camp," Gators coach Will Muschamp said. "Gilly is going to get the bulk of the reps, and then obviously Mack and Matt are in that next pecking order and Omarius Hines is going to get his touches as well, so that's kind of where we are."

Converted linebacker Chris Johnson should also get sporadic carries, as well as Trey Burton and fullback Hunter Joyer.

"I'm very encouraged with the other guys," Muschamp said. "There's not a tremendous drop off in my opinion, other than experience. I think that would be the deciding factor is the confidence we have in the experience Mike has as opposed to other guys."

Defensive line forming: After a long day of roster decisions Sunday, the Gators are ready to move forward with four starting defensive linemen.

Linebacker Lerentee McCray is at the Buck position, a combination of a linebacker and defensive end, to replace injured starter Ronald Powell. Omar Hunter and Sharrif Floyd are in place at defensive tackle with Dominique Easley at end.

Three of the four projected starters have injury concerns. McCray and Floyd have been slowed by shoulder injuries and are day-to-day. Easley started 12 games at defensive tackle last season before tearing the ACL in his left knee. He has been held out of parts of practice as a precaution, but he is expected to be fine for the season.

Behind the defensive line, the linebacker corps is nearly set. Jon Bostic, a senior from Palm Beach Central High School, will be at middle linebacker and Jelani Jenkins will play on the weak-side.

Neiron Ball and Darrin Kitchens are competing for the strong-side spot. Muschamp said they are even, though Ball has been bothered by an ankle problem.

Quarterback derby continues: Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel will continue sharing equal snaps this week. Driskel has a bruised shoulder and is not cleared for contact. He will be reevaluated next week.

Other injury updates: Starting tight end Jordan Reed has been out at least a week with an MCL injury, but Muschamp hoped to have him back by Tuesday. … Back-up tight end Colin Thompson, a true freshman who was expected to play significantly this year, will undergo surgery on his foot and could be out eight weeks. … Offensive lineman D.J. Humphries, a freshman, is on crutches and should miss at least the first game with an MCL injury. … defensive back Marcus Maye remains sidelined by a knee injury. … Offensive tackle Matt Patchan will miss a day or two with a strained shoulder.

Five UF football coaches signed contract extensions in offseason

By Jason Lieser Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

GAINESVILLE — Five Florida assistant coaches signed contract extensions during the offseason, including defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. The University Athletic Association released the contracts in response to records requests by several media outlets, including The Palm Beach Post.

Quinn was signed for $500,000 per year through the end of this season and will get the same salary next year. He also received an $80,000 signing bonus and will get another $80,000 if he is still on staff as of Jan. 31, 2014.

D.J. Durkin, the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator, got a $75,000 raise and will make $340,000 in salary this year and next.

Running backs coach Brian White, who was the interim offensive coordinator for the Gator Bowl last season, received a $50,000 increase on his one-year extension, bringing his salary to $290,000.

Florida also extended the contracts of defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson ($230,000) and tight ends coach Derek Lewis ($190,000) but did not raise their salaries.

All coaches also get $10,000 annually for wearing Nike gear and use of a vehicle.

Mike Gillislee wins competition among Florida running backs

by Jason Lieser

There were strong challengers, but senior Mike Gillislee emerged decisively as the Gators' starting running back and is slated to get the majority of the carries this season.

Freshman Matt Jones and sophomore Mack Brown were fighting to knock him out of the top spot or at least earn a bigger portion of the attempts, but were not able to do so.

"The bulk of them are with Gilly," coach Will Muschamp said when asked how expects the carries to be divided this year. "That was pretty evident as we worked through camp.

"Gilly is gonna get the bulk of the reps, and then obviously Mack and Matt are in that next pecking order and Omarius Hines is going to get his touches as well, so that's kind of where we are."

Converted linebacker Chris Johnson should also get sporadic carries, as well as Trey Burton and fullback Hunter Joyer.

"I'm very encouraged with the other guys," Muschamp said. "So, there's not a tremendous drop off in my opinion, other than experience. Those guys haven't played a lot and Matt hasn't played any. I think that would be the deciding factor is the confidence we have in the experience Mike has as opposed to other guys."

Florida opens Sept. 1 vs. Bowling Green.

Predicting the Gators' Week 1 starting line-up

by Jason Lieser
Florida will start working Thursday in preparation for the Sept. 1 season opener against Bowling Green, meaning the team must redistribute the practice reps. The starters needs more snaps so they can get ready.

There are no guarantees, but based on what the coaching staff has been saying, here is a reasonable prediction of who the team will go with for the opener:
Florida coach Will Muschamp said he plans to release a full depth chart Monday. He likely will announce a starting quarterback between Wednesday and Monday.
–Muschamp continues to say that sophomore QBs Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel are even, but it is logical that Brissett came into camp with a slight edge because he played more in 2011. His lead might have grown while Jeff Driskel has been healing from a bruise in his non-throwing shoulder, though Muschamp says that injury is a non-factor in the race.
–It might be a non-factor, but as of now Driskel is not cleared for contact. If the opener was today, he would be out. Although if the opener was today, that would surprise a lot of people.
–Driskel will be evaluated again Monday. If he is not cleared, that virtually assure Brissett the starting job.
–Muschamp confirmed Mike Gillislee as the starting running back yesterday, saying Matt Jones and Mack Brown are in line behind him.
–Every spot on the offensive line seems solidified except for left guard, where Kyle Koehne appears to be the favorite.
–If starting TE Jordan Reed (knee) is out for Week 1, the Gators have a tough decision. They likely will have to choose out of Kent Taylor, Clay Burton and Tevin Westbrook. Burton (1 game) is the only one who has ever played tight end in college. If those three are not viable, Florida could move RB Mike Gillislee or RB Trey Burton to that spot.
–Defensively, Muschamp verified the defensive front seven yesterday, with the exception of the strong-side linebacker spot. Darrin Kitchens and Neiron Ball are vying for that job, and Kitchens has been healthier.
–In the secondary, it seems obvious that Matt Elam and Josh Evans will start at safety. Muschamp said four players are in the hunt for the two cornerback spots. He also said it really doesn't matter who starts because Florida expects to use all four of them throughout each game. Based on what coaches and players have said, as well as what they did in Saturday's open practice, it looks like Marcus Roberson and Loucheiz Purifoy are the guys.

AMERICAN HERITAGE'S GREG BRYANT A FIVE-STAR RECRUIT, PER RIVALS

by Matt Porter

American Heritage's Greg Bryant probably woke up today feeling the same as he did yesterday, but according to one major recruiting website, he's a whole new player.

Bryant (5-11, 197) was named a five-star recruit by Rivals.com in its latest batch of rankings, released Monday. The senior was deemed the No. 14 prospect in the nation and the No. 2 running back, behind Richmond (Va.) Hermitage senior Derrick Green.

Bryant had 2,180 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, carrying American Heritage to the Class 3A state title. He is being recruited by South Carolina, Auburn and Oklahoma, among numerous top programs.

As always, recruiting rankings are subjective (and essentially meaningless). We present them here for your potential entertainment.

For example, Glades Day's Kelvin Taylor, who is ranked as the country's top running back by ESPN and 247Sports, is ranked by Rivals No. 9 among running backs and the 47th-best prospect overall.

ESPN has Taylor at No. 22 in the nation. 247Sports has him 17th.

ESPN has Bryant at No. 30 in the nation. 247Sports has him 79th.

Bryant is ESPN's No. 2 running back, behind Taylor. 247Sports ranks him No. 8 among running backs.

Will Muschamp says Mike Gillislee will be Florida Gators' feature back

Matt Watts

GAINESVILLE -- Although not much of note came from Sunday's coaches meeting, coach Will Muschamp said Monday that senior running back Mike Gillislee will receive the bulk of the carries this season.

Gillislee has been the leader for the starting spot throughout camp, but freshman Matt Jones and sophomore Mack Brown were also in contention.

"The bulk of them are with Gilly. That was discussed [Sunday]," Muschamp said. "That was pretty evident as we worked through camp. Gilly is going to get the bulk of the reps."

Jones, Brown, Omarius Hines and converted linebacker Chris Johnson will receive carries, as well as fullback Hunter Joyer.

ASSISTANTS EXTENDED

Florida's athletic department has extended the contracts of several assistant coaches and given raises to running backs coach Brian White and special teams coordinator/linebackers coach D.J. Durkin, according to The Associated Press.

Durkin received a two-year extension and a $75,000 raise per year, and White was extended an additional year and given a $50,000 raise. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was extended one year and receives an additional $80,000 bonus if with the team on Jan. 31, 2014. Tight ends coach Derek Lewis and defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson were extended one year but did not receive a raise in salary.

Defensive line coach Bryant Young's contract, due to expire at the end of the season, was not extended.

• Tight end Colin Thompson will have a second surgery on his injured foot, this time to insert a screw, Muschamp said. He will be out at least eight weeks.

Florida TE Thompson sidelined with ankle injury

GAINESVILLE, Fla. Florida tight end Colin Thompson will have surgery to insert a screw in his right foot, an injury that could sideline him at least two months.

The 6-foot-4 freshman from Warminster, Pa., had been expected to play a key role for the 23rd-ranked Gators this season. Making matters worse at the position, Jordan Reed has missed the last week of practice with a knee injury.

Coach Will Muschamp says Thompson's injury is "unfortunate and disappointing." Thompson had an initial surgery in the spring, but Muschamp says his ankle didn't heal properly.

In other injury news, linebacker Lerentee McCray (shoulder) is expected to return to practice early this week, and backup offensive tackle D.J. Humphries will miss at least two weeks with a sprained knee ligament.
